A worthwhile challenge

Pros

The company's early stage lends itself to lots of opportunities across all business functions, and the rate of learning is phenomenal. The team is filled with talented, enthusiastic, and scrappy members who are the best mentors I have had in my career. It's a joy to come to work every day knowing that you are working on meaningful problems and have the opportunity to build solutions to those problems quickly.

Cons

Understand the nature of an early-stage startup before you join, and ensure it aligns with what you are actually looking for in a job. Part of why the rate of learning and career growth is so high is because every team member is required to take deep ownership of their work and deliver results quickly. This often means dealing with a lot more ambiguity, doing tasks outside the scope of your traditional role, and simply doing a lot more work faster than you would at a larger company. The experiences can be extremely rewarding for those that are willing to put in the work but demands are (reasonably) high. Furthermore, a lot of processes are still being figured out around product development and the team is rapidly evolving. In these environments being able to proactively identify, prioritize, and solve problems independently is a must.

Sales Job in Disguise

Pros

Pay is decent and you’re at home working

Cons

Ignore the positive reviews—this was one of the most challenging and disappointing professional experiences of my career, and I’ve previously worked in a hospital setting. The Patient Engagement Specialist role is heavily sales-driven, despite being marketed as a non-sales position. Employees are held to strict and stressful performance metrics, with rigid and often insensitive policies surrounding attendance and bookings. Nearly every call is an escalation, and the expectation is to “sell” the company’s services using scripted tactics to secure a minimum number of daily bookings. Failure to meet these quotas results in exclusion from overtime opportunities, repeated one-on-one meetings focused on shortcomings, and indirect criticism through team-wide messages on Slack.
