Pros

-Benefits are fantastic. The healthcare is the best I've ever had and they offer free dental and vision insurance. Good 401k matching and stock options available. -The community groups are wonderful. Parents, Pride, Women Engineers, Afroblock, etc. They offer opportunities to connect and get support from others across the company. -In-person meetups are great (when they happen). -Company provided laptops and work from home stipend with the option to work in-office if location permits it. -There are so many truly talented, smart people working there who I learned a lot from in my time at Square.

Cons

-Lack of empathy from Jack and upper management especially after repeated layoffs. The message was basically "deal with it or leave" after laying off over 1000 employees and moving their workload to others. -Jack's "inner circle" is a group of cherry-picked yes-men with no transparency. They are the real decision makers at Square. -While Square preaches equality and diversity, there is still a lack of accountability when incidents occur. I've witnessed discriminatory and misogynistic leadership succeed while "problem" employees are quietly pushed out. -Benefits are slowly being stripped away, ie. bereavement leave which was reduced to just a few days for the death of a close family member including a child or spouse. -Customer service reps are treated as dispensable and jobs are being farmed out to other countries so Square can pay less per employee. The quality of customer service has gone down significantly because of this. -Your experience is very dependent on which team in which department you are in. Some are better than others and consistency between orgs is lacking. -Stack ranking for raises is deeply problematic. I've watched high-performers get no raise and a poor rating so that others could get promotions because they are severely limited by upper management. So much is dependent on your managers opinion and oftentimes how much they like you. Bias is a huge problem.

Pros

Pros: • Square and its parent company, Block, have an admirable mission to empower businesses and individuals through innovation and financial inclusion. Their focus on values such as transparency, empathy, and collaboration sets them apart in the fintech space. • The recruitment team reflects these values well. My experience with them was detailed, thorough, and professional, setting a high standard for candidate engagement. • Square has created groundbreaking products that genuinely help businesses thrive. Being part of a company that prioritizes empowerment and accessibility is inspiring. • During the interview process, I encountered a leader who truly embodied the values of empathy, inclusion, and innovation. His engagement and thoughtfulness demonstrated what leadership at Square could and should look like, and it was inspiring to see these values in action. It is too bad I am not on his team.

Cons

Cons: • Leadership and company culture don’t always align with the values they promote. For example: • Empathy: Some interactions during the my time here lacked basic engagement and respect, which felt at odds with the company’s commitment to this value. • Transparency: It was evident the position had already been filled before my interview, but this was not communicated. This lack of openness diminished trust in the process. • Innovation: Suggestions for thinking outside the box during a conversation were dismissed outright, which seemed contradictory to Square/Block’s emphasis on creativity. • Respect for colleagues and fostering an inclusive, empathetic environment is foundational to the company’s mission but was not consistently demonstrated during my interactions. • Decision-making within teams appears rigid and less open to innovative ideas, which contradicts Square/Block’s emphasis on creativity.

Pros

Square empowers entrepreneurs with tools to streamline operations and enhance customer experiences.

Cons

Square’s creative marketing team suffers from a severe lack of genuine leadership, exacerbating confusion and undermining productivity. Despite having individuals designated as core leaders, these figures fail to effectively guide the team. Some have remained in their positions since the company's inception, while others were recruited from prominent companies like Meta, yet they lack the necessary leadership skills. The Creative Core lead, in particular, lacks business acumen and managerial abilities, prioritizing personal creative endeavors over setting clear goals and strategies for the team. This has led to a pattern of over-hiring, driven more by a desire to retain headcount than by actual workload demands, resulting in underutilized staff and unnecessary expenditures. Furthermore, the failure to articulate team objectives has created ambiguity and uncertainty among team members, hindering their ability to perform effectively. The situation is compounded by the hiring of incompetent individuals, worsening team inefficiency and performance. Despite efforts by employees to raise concerns about these issues, feedback is often disregarded, and dissenters are gaslighted into silence, perpetuating a cycle of stagnation and frustration. The core leadership team under the Creative Core lead also fails to inspire confidence, with some members showing favoritism and lacking accountability. Adding to the dysfunction, the recently hired operations lead lacks essential skills and prefers project management tasks over operational responsibilities, relying on AI applications to compensate for their shortcomings in interpersonal communication. This contributes to a toxic work environment marked by low morale, as employees are pitted against each other and trust erodes. Despite these glaring issues, there appears to be a lack of awareness or action from higher management, exemplified by Jack Dorsey's apparent obliviousness to the toxic workplace culture festering within the company. Without decisive intervention and meaningful change, the company risks further deterioration of its workforce and overall performance.
