Pros

I've worked in three different departments at SEU. The administration is always tedious, but my boss made all the difference in my overall work experience. When I was reporting directly to a professor or SEU grad, I found them sympathetic to any struggles I was having. Those who have dealt with the system for a long time are more prepared to help you navigate through it. Frequently my work assignments were vague, but that also allowed me a fair amount of personal freedom, and as long as the students were benefiting from my work (measured through tests/reviews/etc) I wasn't burdened by too much administrative pressure.

Cons

As I mentioned above, your boss matters. Those who are hired on from other schools to work in administration only were often incredibly unwelcoming, incompetent, and indifferent to the students (and the worker bees). One of my bosses created a toxic environment of favoritism (which she vocally prided herself on) and constantly made clear how unhappy she was at SEU. Be wary of any leadership figures at a university who constantly disparage students--they've chosen the wrong field and will make your life hell because of it.

Pros

-Collaboration is highly supported -Core Values of University are revered, take those seriously in interview and work in this university -Relationships can develop across the university, all you have to do is collaborate! -Academic - you can always get involved in activities that will stretch your mind, as a staff person or a faculty member, it's highly encouraged -The University takes great care of their employees. Professional development, events and functions, etc. Camaraderie is valued. -Great pay, much better than most positions at UT

Cons

-Depending on where you are, people will argue that there is not a ton of room for growth. Rare (but it happens) that you get to do work outside of your job description and grow your position / argue for a strong raise. -Political, but it's up to you if you want to participate in the politics. -People who really shouldn't be working there anymore almost never get let go -Some people work with students and treat them terribly. It's really sad when your job is to work with students and you treat them like second rate citizens.
