It was great

Pros

Great people, great mission, and great students.

Cons

Management is flat out incompetent (at least in IT). If you're in IT don't expect to find a job or move within the company unless you're friends with the curent UT crowd and come from UT yourself. In the last year no one in IT has been hired without being a previous UT coworker with one of the current directors and those who are hired are often flat out incompetent without a single day worth of experience in the the position to which they were hired (this includes managers, supervisors, etc). Programmers who say in their cover letter they don't program, supervisors who have never worked in the area they supervise or supervised anyone themselves, the list goes on. Qualifications don't matter, only your friendship with UT crowd is required to get hired. The VP, while having a great vision, seems to be quickly losing a political battle to the growing UT crowd most of whom are very keen on his job and not so much on the people they're here to help. It isn't uncommon to hear IT folks directly say they're not here for the students and they're not here for the faculty/staff (leaving their own careers as their only motivation).

A shrinking, declining institution - run

Pros

Parking on campus is easy

Cons

This institution won't be open in ten years, I guarantee that. Their student body is less than half the size it was pre-covid, it has a bloated administration, classes are taught by mostly adjuncts, and the students and their parents run the show. They're paying so much already for so little that it's expected that everyone working here bends over backwards to their demands.

Good for young, developing professionals

Pros

Really "cut my teeth" here and learned a lot as a young professional in student affairs. Since it's such a small campus community you have the opportunity to wear tons of different hats and learn about many different facets of student affairs and campus culture. Beautiful campus, really enjoyed working with most of my co-workers. Felt supported in my professional development and had opportunities for self-directed growth. A big pro was the opportunity to pursue discounted graduate education as an employee. Had a positive relationship with my manager and most of my colleagues.

Cons

Not great work-life balance, even by student affairs standards. When I left there was lots of cross-departmental "drama" with some departments having long-standing grudges or feuds over petty things. I had a good relationship with my manager but heard nightmarish stories about how poorly some managers and department leaders treated their staff. University leadership mismanaged a series of crises during my time there and both staff and students lost trust in a lot of the administration. It's a top-down institution, so it was very challenging to enact meaningful change from the trenches. Definitely learned a lot, but I was ready to leave after a few years.
