Pros

Interesting projects, generally good people

Cons

There are two kinds of marketing at Stantec - regional teams which work in a certain geography and sector people whose job is corporate. On a regional team, probably 90% of your workload will be proposals. They'll tell you otherwise but really you're a proposal factory. Sometimes you get to do neat ones but most the time it's cranking out one after the other and the grind can wear you down and be super repetitive. As a sector person it seems you do everything across the company and are really busy and can't get things done. Despite being a big company, there's not a lot of opportunity for marketing people to move on. A regional person may become a team lead but that's about it. Sector positions don't come up often and when they do it's inconsistent in how they are placed. If it is posted, you compete with everyone else in the company who's been waiting and don't have much of a chance if they know someone more than you. A lot of times roles aren't posted which is frustrating for people who want to do something new and weren't given the chance. Most times jobs are just given to people, whether qualified or not, because they are in with certain people. Quite a number of senior jobs are held by people with little to no experience or background in that area. That includes directors and people leading marketing. Salaries for marketing are not great and raises are generally small. Benefits are also not great and were cut a while back so you basically make less money because of it. A lot of good marketing people were also let go even though they are already really understaffed. They like to say they put people first but it really comes down to share price. I'd say if you want some experience to start out, it's good but if you will want the opportunity to grow then you will probably have to do it somewhere else.
