      No longer is 'working hard' the qualification to promotion

      Pros

      Steady paycheck. Unlike many other industries, layoffs are few and far between.

      Cons

      The culture has turned drastically from a place you could work hard and be rewarded to one where only the 'chosen' few seem to advance regardless of capabilities. Some VERY unqualified management personnel in place in too many key positions because...someone 'liked' them.

      Pros

      If you are young and looking for a place to begin your career, this may be the place for you. Get your experience in the industry and get out.

      Cons

      Highly political. You NEVER know who your true friends are. Company killed the culture with a reorganization several years ago and can't figure out why employees don't live the brand. This was a truly wonderful place to work until 2003. You looked forward to getting to work; that's no longer true. Senior management oftentimes incompetent and frequently repeats errors made in the past. State they embrace "leadership courage" and those with differing opinions. If you're one of those then you're cast aside. You won't enjoy any success unless you are a lapdog.

      State Farm is large and successful and still greatly values its employees. I couldn't be happier.

      The company could do a better job of embracing technology.
