Fairly fun environment, painfully low compensation

Pros

Despite lack of office amenities, employees are fun, friendly, and outgoing. Management is driven by results. Engineers are outgoing and A-type, which is rare everywhere else.

Cons

Pay is 50% lower for equivalent positions at any other tech company in Silicon Valley. Bonuses are overwhelmingly tied to company performance, so even if you do well in your position, your bonus could be laughably small (even if the company does well, the bonuses are still laughably small). Also, no stock. Every other company in this area offers stock, which can represent a huge percentage of your total compensation. Make no mistake, this is an incremental-improvement engineering organization. Due to the highly regulated environment and highly homogenized market, you just can't expect to see truly innovative products come out of this place. Despite using the gallup to screen candidates, hire/no hire decisions are fairly arbitrary. There is no true 'standard' interview process nor training for interviewers, leading to a lot of hires being hired because they 'fit in.' Promotions are similar. There is no impartial system developed to determine promotion, rather just the subjective decision of management. I was favored by management and was promoted quickly, but I saw others who were not so lucky, despite their qualifications. Also, like most satellite offices (HQ is in MI), advancement is limited if you want to stay in the area. Not Stryker's fault, just the reality of all satellite offices. Overall I left because I got bored, and was offered double my compensation at another tech company in silicon valley (along with fantastic amenities).

Pros

Great products, great company mission, good compensation and general benefits. Wonderful local community in Kalamazoo with excellent schools and resources for families.

Cons

Work-life balance is nonexistent -- they will tell you what you want to hear during the recruiting process but be ready to make this organization the center of your life. Regardless of your abilities, your success here is defined by who you know. An earlier review states that at Stryker, "You're great ... until you're not." Couldn't put it any better. Upset the wrong person and you are done.
