Outsourcing IT

Pros

Good benefits, established company, respected upper management

Cons

IT has been outsourcing to India for a number of years and the trend is growing. There seems to be a bias toward offering new staffing opportunities to outsourcing companies based in India despite quality and efficiency issues. Currently 40% of IT delivery resources working across SunTrust's US locations are from India. And virtually all resources placed in US offices by the India-based vendors are there on a visa. This does not reflect the market distribution in those cities for available talent. Finally SunTrust has an Indian CIO and many in IT management. So read between the lines.

Pros

The benefits and pay are pretty good. MOST people are good to work with. Working environment is pleasant and corporate office downtown offers a lot of nice benefits as far as location goes.

Cons

Was laid off then I applied and was offered another position 6 months later, then laid off again 3 months after that due to reduction in force. Really makes you think twice about the loyalty to the employees - there is none! No assistance in finding another position within the company - you either apply like everyone else or take your severance and go. Nothing done within HR to help place you or give you preference before an outside hire. In this sense the company lacks compassion for its employees and would rather pay you to leave than keep you. Seriously left a very bad taste in my mouth being laid off twice in a year!

Pros

The people I work work with are really great. Pay is more than minimum wage for part time tellers ( not by much though). It's fun to get to know the regular clients.

Cons

Training for tellers is not very good. I felt like I was put in front of clients too soon which lead to a lot of mistakes and pissed off people. They keep increasing the referral goals when at my branch it's difficult to just get one for the day. Because of the location, I usually just saw businesses coming in for change or employees of those businesses coming in to cash a check who has no interest in opening an account. We are constantly going through branch managers because the traffic is so minimal that its impossible for them to meet their goals. They keep adding new services such as Western Union and check cashing for non suntrust clients that have non suntrust checks. It's like they're turning into a grocery store. A lot of clients treat you like your incompetent and will actually try to tell you how to perform your job. The referral goals are the same for every teller at every branch. They don't take into consideration that some branches have little traffic and can't get three a day. Even if you go on vacation for a week, your goal for the month remains the same. If you are struggling to meet your goals then you're written up, yet you're not given any training to improve. Everybody from the branch manager down to the tellers are stressed which creates a negative atmosphere. Tellers are forced to have almost scripted conversations with clients, and try to sell them products that they don't need or want. It feels phony and pushy. Like asking a person to open a savings account when they don't have hardly anything in their checking.
