Strong benefits but poor leadership and outdated systems

Pros

Being owned by Paychex is a huge plus. The benefits are really good with the larger parent company. Paid time off is good, the health insurance/dental/vision options are all great and are reasonable in cost. Employee Stock Purchase and 401k contributions are great as well. The parent company is the only thing earning the two stars.

Cons

Having worked previously for one of SurePayroll's competitors that used to benefit from clients leaving SurePayroll, I can understand why they left. Their processes, procedures and accountability leave a lot to be desired and their systems are all completely outdated. The problem comes from the top down. They can't keep upper management, so there is no clear path or focus for either employees nor clients. And that is all very visible. When you lack true leadership, everything suffers and no one takes any accountability. And the ones that really suffer are clients because there just isn't a way for even happy content employees to provide the level of service that clients deserve. You want to do good by your clients, but the systems in place, lack of knowledge sharing and lack of solid leadership all prevent you from really doing good work if you honestly care about doing a good job and providing a valuable service. Paychex and their leadership is too busy buying up all the other payroll companies to actually care about the ones that already fall under its umbrella. The internet can't even keep up on who the actual leadership of Paychex and SurePayroll are. John Cumbee is no longer the CEO as listed below on this survey, hasn't been for awhile.

Know what you need

Pros

If you're considering this company, be sure to know what’s important to you and your goals because this company may be unable to provide you with what you want or deserve. This probably isn’t the place for you if you’re looking for a supportive, growth-oriented, people-first workplace.

Cons

My experience with this company has been disappointing, and I wouldn't recommend this employer for many reasons. There’s a lack of direction and support from upper management, making it difficult to understand the company’s goals and how your role fits into the bigger picture. Many in middle management try but they don’t get what they need, so it’s hard for them to help those lower in the organization. The company fails to communicate key information about its direction. There’s no transparency or clarity around the company's vision or future, which creates confusion and frustration. It’s not uncommon to be asked to handle tasks outside your job description. Many times, you don’t receive the information you need to be successful at these extra tasks. These assignments frequently take you away from your primary job, leading to criticism twice: once when you don’t meet your assigned responsibilities and once when you don’t complete the extra tasks. Feedback is infrequent and vague, and what little you do get is often unhelpful. There’s no real mechanism for setting annual objectives or receiving annual performance reviews, leaving you in the dark about how you're performing or where to improve. The culture is toxic and there's a general sense of negativity throughout the organization. Employees are not supported and collaboration is rare. The work environment is filled with backstabbers. People are more focused on advancing themselves at the expense of others. The HR department was cut way back, so there aren’t really even any people to call for help. Even if you get someone, they’re scared to go against the company. There is little to no focus on career growth or development. No clear paths for advancement and if you try to express interest in growth opportunities, you're met with indifference. Leadership promotes people who have little experience or qualification for the role. The company fails to provide the tools and resources necessary for employees to succeed. You're often left to figure things out on your own, which makes it hard to excel.
