Pros

The company is amazing in many ways. You get a chance to work with beautiful products, passionate people, and a brand sold through top retailers. The talented people look forward to working every day because they know they can make a big impact. With most of us being +/- 25 years old, that means a lot early in a career. In my brief experience, the president probably the smartest person I have ever known.

Cons

The investment in people simply isn't there. The mentality is that you can be replaced. It is a public policy, they just haven't printed it into the handbook yet. Stay late for catalog season, that is part of your job description. Don't like working weekends? Get another job. Don't think $38,000 is enough to be away from your family for weeks at a time, probably not a good fit for Surya. Too far of a drive from Atlanta area or Rome? We are moving 10 miles closer now be quiet. Stretched thin without the right equipment? You'll need to raise hell to get what you need. Surya wants Atlanta talent, Calhoun wages, and an Indian work week. I can't say this more clearly, most employees are living paycheck to paycheck. Almost every young professional in every department. Not even within 25% of the industry averages. A lot of talk about high raise percentages, but that means nothing when you are falling behind today. Some departments are seriously struggling to find their way. Customer service is on leader number 15, apparently the others couldn't cut it even though they were seasoned experts. Graphics has a heavy management rotation with the 3rd person in so many years, mainly due to a complete lack of knowledge over the team. One should need to know how to use photoshop to be able to make any graphics decisions, or at least know what a PSD is. HR, watch out that job is temporary. If you report to the guy in charge of these groups, run.

Thanks for your thoughtful, and helpful comment. Over the past few months, the Leadership has invested in people and processes designed to help ALL employees. As you say: "The company is good, not great yet." We know there are many opportunities as a business to improve, and to share successes with our employees. Thank you for what you are doing today as a Surya employee, and please keep the communications flowing.

Pros

The offices are in windowless concrete bunkers, so there is no chance of getting skin cancer from sun exposure. If there is a nuclear bomb, employees could probably hunker down and survive in Calhoun for a couple of weeks. Also, daily saunas are good for vascular health, so sitting at my desk should provide the same benefits.

Cons

This company is so cheap they try to save money by not properly cooling the offices, studio and warehouse. This is Georgia for heaven’s sake, not India, and we need our air conditioning. Think it is funny and insignificant? Try working around computer equipment and huge servers all day in 80 plus degree heat. It’s a wonder the hardware doesn’t fry, snap crackle and pop. The studio can be over 100 degrees. Management thinks it’s okay to scrimp on electricity costs while thousands of dollars of equipment fries. The warehouse is a virtual oven with people doing heavy labor while sniffing up carpet fumes, but it doesn’t matter because this only effects the workers and they are disposable – they already don’t use safety harnesses and use broken ladders.

Well, thanks for the interesting take; we enjoy a chuckle around here. Our new facility will open very soon, and will provide a better working environment for all of us. In the meantime, feel free to drop in, call (ext. 242) or email (Steve.Lovig@Surya.com) so I can learn more about your concerns.

Pros

I love the atmosphere and co-workers. I love my position with the company as well.

Cons

Like any employer, there are always negatives. Right now, its that we're growing so fast, we are running out of room while the new faculty is being built.

Thank you for the kind comment, and the good input. We're all looking forward to the extra space we'll have once we move into our brand new 1 million square foot building later this year!
