Pros

Coworkers are awesome in the office.

Cons

This list is going to be long- -Swift has taken away many of our capabilities to do our jobs efficiently. As a result, drivers are more angry than ever. We no longer have the capability to accurately predict how much freight we need for the amount of trucks coming into the areas. We no longer have the capability to quickly and accurately find trailers for the drivers. -Perhaps the most frustrating is Swift's gigantic bureaucracy that has a nasty habit of 'passing the buck' to another vague department that no one knows the true purpose of. -Swift has proven time and again that they do not understand specialty freight, and no one is listening when we express our concerns. For example, when we first merged over we requested a macro to be created for yard checks so we could monitor fuel and temperature levels. Swift promptly denied us saying that the requested macro was 'not necessary for the business'. In the past few months we've paid several hundred thousand in OS&D claims due to trailers running out of fuel and spoiling freight. Still, no one listens. -From a planning standpoint, Swift's grading system makes no sense. The planner scorecards do not care about deadhead mileage. They only score on how often planners use the computer's recommendations to match trucks with loads. This is a system that can be manipulated to show flawless performance. The recommendation system only gives a mere 500 miles per day to most teams, requiring the planners to manually plan on an ANCIENT system to get drivers the miles to pay their bills. -We've had several office staff hospitalized from the stress since we were merged. And I do mean several. -Swift and their COO Richard Stocking require us to attend something called 'Swift University'. This has got to be the biggest waste of company money I have EVER seen. I was required to attend online classes for what was called a 'leadership training'. One of the courses was, literally, a documentary about the Secretariat-the race horse. With nothing at the end to translate it to how it helped me become a leader. The next video was a montage of inspirational speeches from sports movies. Swift has several thousand office staff that were required to take this course. Assuming everyone makes $10-$18 an hour, and that everyone spent the three hours taking this course, Swift spent an estimated $90,000-$162,000 to show it's office workers a documentary about a racehorse. -AS400 is ancient. SO ancient. It was written in 1988. The mouse was invented in 1992. The outdated computer system requires exponentially more keystrokes than any other system in the industry. Several office staff have reported severe pain related to carpal tunnel syndrome. -Drivers aren't making money. They are being VERY nasty to the office staff. There's only so much we can do when our hands have been zip-tied behind our backs and we're forced to bob for apples to get our basic duties done. We're doing three times the footwork and only capable of accomplishing 25-50% of what we were doing before. We've had to hire more office staff to keep up with the demand, and we're still struggling to push our numbers up to what they were before the merger. -Benefits are some of the worst I've ever seen. Insurance refuses to pay a dime till the deductible has been hit. There are much better insurance plans out there people. Don't be disillusioned thinking that Swift has a good insurance plan. It's only useful if you have a catastrophic accident. In the mean time you'll have to pay a fortune to maintain your good health.

Pros

They take the inexperienced. If you get a good Driver Manager, you'll do well. They do their best to match you with a good mentor and if you don't like them you can switch. If you don't like you Driver manager, you can switch. The longer you are with them the better the pay and miles. The Equipment is generally well kept up with little problem getting things repaired at the numerous stops. We had one of their best Driver managers and I joined my husband as a Team after he was with them for over a year. They trained me for free and he was my mentor. The starting pay for us Teaming was not too bad and the driver manager gave us all the miles we wanted while allowing us more together time while on the road (normal teams only get maybe 2 hours of awake time together which can strain a husband wife team without more together time). Our Driver manager was proactive on setting up good loads before he left for the weekends and always went to bat for us with any problems, including finding good trailers for us close by, watching the boards closely for the good runs to come out for us and getting us home when we wanted quickly. It mostly depends on getting a good manager so ask around. Also, we did not have to have a driver manager out of our home town or state. It may have changed but it was allowed when requested.

Cons

If you are stuck needing a load on the weekends and your driver manager didn't work out a load ahead, you'll be hard pressed to get any help from the weekend crew. They are uncaring jerks if you have any problems and it can take hours to days for them to get back to you or act on something. The pay is really poor starting out (after you start on your own for the first 6-8 months). You'll get Short runs, with little pay, u can't afford much home time when it's time your first several months. You have to pay your dues when you are starting out. Regional and set routes are for those who have been their longer and are likable and personable. It's hit and miss with trainers / mentors and Driver managers. Many will complain that the trainer/mentor time is too short, but I disagree somewhat on that. It's not that it is too short, it's that new drivers feel scared and overwhelmed being and having to learn so much more on their own (which is why a good Trainer/ mentor is imperative and a helpful communicative Driver Manager is important). You will come across a lot of idiots and see some disgusting things at times from other drivers. Driving Truck is not as easy or mindless as it sounds to many would be drivers. There is a lot to learn, including laws, rules, weights, math, measures, critical thinking skills, driving, backing, customer service skills, patience, forgiveness, how to drive in different types of weather, some mechanical skills, dealing with stress and sleeping in loud strange places and if you want to team, learning to trust others to drive safely while you sleep and sleeping while moving.

Pros

Swift Transportation is a good company. I was always treated well by them. My driver leaders were all good people. For a company to take in new drivers, train them and put them in a beautiful brand new 2020 truck is really incredible. If I ever had an issue I was compensated for it.

Cons

The cons are not about Swift Transportation, but life in any trucking company. It's hard to do what you'd like when you're an over the road driver. You never know where you might be, and you miss out on a lot of life. Expect to just drive, eat, shower and sleep. It's lonely. Living in the truck gets old.
