Pros

Colleagues at the Director level and below make the org go. They are largely a committed and personal values-driven group of people.

Cons

New employees have to travel A LOT and are often staffed to the max # of projects Comparatively low pay. Recently eliminated bonuses and rarely an above COL raise The newly minted “Chiefs” (yes, in 2024 that’s the title they gave themselves and should be indicative of how they view DEI and belonging…), are a bunch of ideas people who don’t actually know how to do much more than sell sell sell. Their salaries continued to rise even as people were summarily laid off. All that matters is sales and “the brand”. Little to no attention is paid to operationalizing any “ideas” or accurately assessing capacity to do good work in the first place. All the systems and structures that existed to protect staff’s safety are gone (“cost-savings”, of course) so no, management relationships are NOT how they are described in the “Why Work Here”. There’s actually no recourse for poor management and no accountability for anyone on the Management Team (Partners) and above. In fact, the MT and “Chiefs” are comprised of some of the most problematic managers you will ever work for.

Pros

Working from home and setting own schedule is a definite plus for those of us with young children. Autonomy is helpful.

Cons

This executive leadership group is the pits. Incestuous, plays favorites, makes unrealistic demands of teams, hypocritical, not transparent. In some organizations, there are people at the top of the food chain who truly do not know how to “lead”. This is that organization. Any flowery 5 star reviews to the contrary have likely been posted by HR.

Pros

I am a mom to 3 young children (ages 6, 5, and 2), and at TNTP I've been able to work part-time from home for the last 3 years. I worked 30 hours/week and was considered a salaried employee and received benefits and paid time off. This was such a rare find that I'm so grateful for - although the pay is quite low (they are a nonprofit, and my previous career was on Wall Street, so I took quite a salary hit), I like being able to keep my foot in the door to keep my skills sharp and still have flexibility to be there for my family. I just recently decided to reduce my hours so that I could spend more time with the kids, and take them to their after school activities, and TNTP and my team has been great to allow me the flexibility to become a PT hourly employee at 20 hours/week. Although I'm no longer salaried, and thus don't receive benefits or PTO, I am able to keep my 403b and continue to receive contributions from TNTP.

Cons

Their HR is still in its infancy, and they still have a long way to go regarding employee policies. For example, when I was salaried, I was technically non-exempt, which means that I should have been paid for any time worked over 30 hours/week. I didn't know this, and HR didn't know this until after I'd been working there for over 2.5 years. But they made up for it by giving me all the back-pay based on the hours that I logged...of course if I had known that I'd be paid for hours worked over 30 hours/week, I would have been more diligent in recording my time!
