Don't be Talbots!

Pros

Nice interaction with your customers. Good associate discounts and benefits. Dedicated store teams that love their customers and the merchandise.

Cons

This company needs to practice what they preach. Dishonest district managers, who lie to you and their upper management. If a district manager turns five productive managers in one year, you would think that would be a red flag to HR. In reality HR does not do their job by checking up on the District Managers. District Managers are allowed to falsify legal documents. Talbots is ok with managing thru intimidation. Store teams are always on the edge when their DM is in the store.

Pros

Talbots was a great part-time job, especially for my first serious employment. They asked for the best from you. They were committed to brand excellence and maintaining a classic tradition while moving forward with the times (visually). The management team was excellent; the GM was considerate and listened to what we needed as employees but never promised what she couldn't deliver. She was an excellent boss to work for and gave me a wonderful structure for what to look for in a leader.

Cons

The only cons would be that all the employees are only part-time. There aren't any full-time positions open until you get to corporate headquarters-type positions. I didn't anticipate any kind of growth while working there. Any other cons were the kind that come from working part-time retail.

Stagnant company with cliques

Pros

Everyone has an agreement that this is a 8:30-5 job, once 5pm hits, pretty much everyone is gone. Latest anyone will stay is 6:30. During the summer there are summer Fridays (half days)

Cons

There are a lot of mixed messages at Talbots, upper management will announce how great everyone is doing, and how great the company is doing as a whole, and then end of fiscal quarters will say the Company actually wasn't doing that great and there will be no raises. People are let go without explanation. Everyone is very cliquey and will feel perfectly OK talking about employees to upper management, without addressing issues properly with peers. No creative support for certain teams, focus is mainly on marketing and hitting numbers.
