The design function is still evolving, and unfortunately, many design managers lack industry expertise or leadership maturity. This can lead to micromanagement, poor direction, and a lack of meaningful guidance.
Remote work is not an option, which can be limiting, especially for those who need flexibility. It’s only possible to be remote if you’re in US.
Recognition is inconsistent. Even when your work is impactful and product success is evident, it might go unacknowledged if your immediate manager doesn’t understand or value it.
There’s little difference between having a manager or not, except during appraisals. If a manager dislikes you, even strong performance might not be rewarded.
Overall, the company and product teams are fantastic, but design leadership undermines much of the good work with poor behavior, lack of professionalism, and limited support.
