Pros

In the time I’ve worked at Blue Rubicon (now Teneo Blue Rubicon), I've worked on everything from corporate reputation and employer brand briefs to behaviour change campaigns for government departments. Each client has faced a different challenge providing new opportunities to stretch and challenge me. Our culture encourages us to broaden our field of vision. Increasing our colleague base in 2016 literally did this. Working with new people, learning from their different experience and viewpoints has been great for us. At least half a dozen or more accounts spring to mind that have teams drawn from across our divisions. IMO the integration has been relatively straight forward because generally speaking, we have shared values. It helps that everyone is welcome to share their views. We’re measured on outputs not presentism. Many people are hot-deskers and work remotely from wherever benefits them or their clients. We’re a company that prioritises training and knowledge-share. I’ve taken both internal and external courses provided by the company. There’s also the option of sabbatical postings with clients, a fairly common occurrence where people temporarily join our clients’ businesses. We’re good at maintaining relationships, keeping in touch with leavers who often become clients down the line. We’re also a company that recognises that life happens. We support people through difficult times alongside helping people to reach personal ambitions and goals. We’ve created opportunities for people to relocate or take extended unpaid leave.

Cons

Maybe because we’re always trying to keep moving it can seem like our decision-making leaves some people behind, even if we’re mindful of involving our colleagues. While we’re not about presentism, if you’re new or just starting out I’m not sure how realistic it is for remote working to be an option.

Pros

Genuinely a great bunch of people to work with. Real collaboration across the business, very much a "one team" mentality. People always happy to share their knowledge with you. This includes senior people who are very approachable. Some of the best clients and briefs around - if you want clients that stand-out on your CV, then Teneo Blue Rubicon has the best client base. Amazing offices in London Bridge - all new and open plan. Work/life balance is actually ok- but really depends on what teams/accounts you're on!!

Cons

The company has grown so much over the past couple of years, with acquisitions of other small agencies and itself has now been acquired. This creates lot of opportunities and allows the business to win bigger briefs, but it feels like senior people have taken their eye off the ball a bit. As a result, it has felt like the quality of work has deteriorated and we have been so swelled by our success that we feel untouchable. There have been quite a few people leave recently, as a result of the new culture of the company. This means that some of the "core" Blue Rubicon people who made the agency what it is today, are now few and far between. We don't do much pure media relations campaigning any more - if you like doing hardworking media and press office work, this isn't the agency for you.

Thanks for your comments. You’re right that we’ve grown and about the opportunities this brings for new and interesting, ever-more integrated briefs. That also offers our people the chance to work on rich, rewarding briefs and to learn new skills. Our growth is also an opportunity to offer our clients more value and more services which is what we’re focused on doing. We’ve been briefed in 2017 by a number of new clients who recognise this and retained by long-standing clients who like our expanding offer. It’s a shame when people leave us but they do so for a range of reasons; to continue their careers in new fields, gain different experience, pursue life’s adventures abroad and so on. We’ve also had quite a few returners who’ve gone elsewhere and felt a drive to come back. We love when that happens. From the companies we’ve brought together, there is emerging a new company culture which is undoubtedly still work in progress. We won’t know if we’ve nailed it for a little while yet, though we’re confident we will. At the heart of all of the firms that came together was one simple belief – that we wanted to challenge the status quo and never be seen as the establishment. That belief has not subsided. How we embody it and what it means for our culture is what we’re busy working on each and every day.
