Pros

1. Guaranteed hours but this is mostly because my department is constantly short staffed. 2. In most cases the work is fairly easy 3. Part time employees can earn vacation and personal time after working at the store long enough 4. The company makes an effort to give back to local communities

Cons

1. The pay in most cases is several dollars lower compared to neighboring stores. Managers try to justify it by saying that while pay is lower, you’ll have more hours than you would at nearby competitors such as Target or Walmart. But if my pay is significantly lower, more hours doesn’t make much of a difference. It more or less balances out in the end. 2. Low sense of urgency amongst management. My department is constantly short staffed and one unexpected call out is enough to throw our department into a state of chaos. And despite numerous instances where we’ve had to scramble to find someone to cover a shift, management never takes this as a sign that they should look into hiring more. Management will occasionally cross-train other employees to help us if we’re in a pinch, but they’ll cross-train employees that work in departments that can’t afford to let their employees leave so we’re stuck in the same boat. 3. While signs advertise making up to 15, it’s rare for that to happen. 15+ an hour is reserved for those who are full time and there’s rarely an opening for that. Most part time people will make between 11 and 14.

Good and bad workplace

Pros

There is room for advancement, not as quick as you would hope. Full time employees get vacation, personal, and sick days, benefits, 401k. All locations are different, I have worked at great locations, and work at a not great location!! I have met some amazing people at giant, both workers and customers!

Cons

The job application pool is so low they are desperate and hiring anyone. Employees are doing whatever they want and getting away with it because of not enough staff. Managers at my location are not fair with distributing labor to departments, they expect departments to run on a ridiculously minimal amount of hours, and when we ask for help are told to figure it out, or shop orders faster. The direct shoppers have less than 2 hours to do a time slot which has up to 6 orders, (some stores have 9/10 an hour) so technically an hour, because every hour orders come thru. The manager spends most of her time in the office, and talks down to people. They start at around $15 but there are people who have been there 18 years who are only making $12-$13. It’s good they raised the starting pay but need to look out for the reliable workers who have been there years, and not take them for granted. Because of not being able to schedule the correct amount of labor needed, I’m doing 2-3 peoples jobs and can’t get everything a lead needs to get done. And if it’s busy and I stay later to help my employees out so they aren’t stuck, I get yelled out for over time, and have to cut the time a different day! I used to LOVE going to work and taking as many shifts as I can. Now I am so exhausted and stressed, I dread going to work. It all starts at the top of the totem pole, I have never seen so many unhappy employees at one location.
