Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. While we’re glad you valued the school-year schedule and breaks, we are truly sorry to hear the concerns you raised. We want to address them directly: Compensation: We know pay is an important issue, and we regularly review salary structures to remain competitive while balancing resources across our schools. Support & Growth: We recognize the importance of professional development and career pathways. Over the past year, we’ve expanded training and created new leadership opportunities, and we will continue to build on this. Staffing & Safety: Student and staff safety are priorities. Recruiting and retaining strong team members remains a challenge in education nationwide, but we are actively hiring and adjusting practices to ensure safe, supportive environments. We understand the frustrations you’ve shared and will continue working toward improvements in these areas. Your feedback helps guide those efforts, and we appreciate you bringing it forward.

Pros

You get out what you put in . Many like this because theres less planning and rules than other teaching positions.

Cons

There is nothing therapeutic or educational about this school. I think the experience varies greatly by location but Plainfield has very little structure or control. The space itself is impractical which sets students and staff up for failure. Students have no real schoolwork and spend hours on computers playing and on YouTube. Little space and no work leads to boredom and fights. High schoolers often steal from staff, run away, and fight with no consequences. They are not taught actual skills to help with emotional difficulties. Students are passed through classes and are enabled to have negative behaviors. They do not get the chance to be successful and many fall into cycles of arrests and hospitalizations. The week I quit, 3 staff members got seriously injured. Many staff take this job as a joke and the hard working staff end up quiting out of frustration and/or injured. There are clear favorites with staff and some rooms get all the attention and help while others end up with up to 15 students, no aides, and ignored calls for help. The motto of never turning students away is great on paper but in practice, theres not enough room or staff and definitely not enough caring or qualified staff . A real therapeutic program needs 1:1 support, social workers with PELs, OT in every building, and actual work and support for children. Right now 50% staff ignore all problems and run the tv and the other 50% is putting out fires and can't teach. MAP sets students up for failure.

Response from The Menta Education Group Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We are glad to hear you appreciated the flexibility and independence in the role, but we are deeply concerned about the challenges you described at our Plainfield location. Educational and Therapeutic Support: We are committed to ensuring that our programs remain structured and therapeutic. While experiences may vary by campus, it is never our intention for students to spend extended time without meaningful academic or social-emotional engagement. Leadership is actively reviewing programming and supports to make sure students are receiving instruction and guidance that prepares them for long-term success. Safety and Staffing: Student and staff safety is our highest priority. We know that under-staffed environments put strain on everyone, and we are continuing to recruit, train, and retain strong team members. We also provide ongoing crisis-prevention training so staff feel equipped to manage challenging behaviors safely. Fairness and Staff Support: We hear your concerns regarding favoritism, break schedules, and workload distribution. We are committed to reviewing practices to ensure equitable support and respect for all staff members. Professional Standards and Transparency: We expect all staff to model professionalism and actively support students. We also recognize the importance of pay transparency and continued professional development, and these remain areas of focus for our leadership teams. Your input highlights areas where we must improve. While we regret that your experience led you to leave, we take this feedback seriously and will continue working to create safer, more supportive environments for both students and staff.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. We do want to clarify a few points for accuracy. All applicants are made aware during the interview process that we are an alternative school setting. We are very transparent about who we serve and the supports in place, and each candidate is provided with both scenarios and a full tour to engage with our students before making a decision. This ensures that staff who join us know what the role entails and feel prepared and supported from the start. In terms of safety, while challenges can arise in any school serving students with unique needs, we have strong protocols and proactive strategies to maintain a safe and supportive environment. For example, while fire alarms were sometimes misused during the 2023–24 school year, new procedures put in place for 2024–25 have been highly effective in preventing this behavior. We are proud of our 97% staff retention rate going into the 2025–26 school year and the continued growth in both staff and student enrollment. This reflects the trust families and employees place in our mission. We remain committed to fostering a structured, safe, and compassionate environment where students and staff can thrive. If you would like to share additional feedback or discuss your experience further, please contact Andy Tretow at andy.tretow@menta.com. We welcome the opportunity to connect directly if you have any further concerns.
