Pros

The mission. That's it. Leadership changes but always slips into us (the so called World Office) vs. them (the thousands of dispersed staff doing the real work).

Cons

The latest "restructure" (there's a constant cycle of expansion and contraction) hit marketing first but more is coming. The excuse is realignment but it's transparently the harbinger of eliminating state business units in the USA. They want the money to keep coming from everyday people in the US but are demoralizing the staff.

Pros

Rewarding mission, opportunities to see and experience nature that TNC protects, excellent benefits, remote work opportunities, smart and nice people to work with.

Cons

There seems to be a lack of understanding at the executive level about how important it is for state chapters to have on-the-ground representation and relationships in marketing. It also feels like there’s a lack of understanding from the people at the top of how much time, effort and money it takes to implement work on the ground. The disconnect is disheartening and somewhat illogical, especially as we’re being encouraged to promote and uplift diverse partners, who take more time to meet and earn trust from.

Pros

1. it offers an unparalleled opportunity to have impact at scale - early in your career, you will be working on projects that can significantly improve conservation outcomes at a state/national/international level 2. Incredibly smart, motivated and well-meaning colleagues who are fun to be around 3. Lots of internal mobility! You can have many careers within a lifetime within TNC and change your area of expertise as well

Cons

1. Highly decentralized, which means that Teams are often working on repetitive projects without talking to each other. 2. Too much emphasis on fundraising 3. Not enough emphasis on whether our work scales 4. Major lack of people of color and women in real positions of power, though they are trying to improve it 5. Not enough middle management capacity 6. Too much work is outsources to consultants since we lack internal strategic capacity
