Pros

Great conservation staff, very dedicated and smart. Ability to work with colleagues in other chapters and units across US and abroad. Nonpartisan approach, this nonprofit excels in bringing many viewpoints to bear on conservation problems. Wide variety of free courses available for further training. Inspiring landscapes to visit and explore.

Cons

Philanthropy methods are dated and some systems barely functional. Science staff have scant knowledge of basics of philanthropy, and while willing to participate, are ill prepared to work with donors. Micromanagement of philanthropy officers, often by under-qualified staff. Difficult to quantify and explain in detail what the conservancy does at chapter and national level; great resistance to obtaining that information. Diversity absent -- the photo on the "careers" web site must be every person of color in the entire organization. Women remain under-represented at leadership level (see top salaries on TNC's 990, via guidestar.org) and on boards, and especially in conservation. Chapters freely change job descriptions and development metrics to suit their particular needs. Extremely cliquish at the upper levels and difficult for new people to access these networks. Culture is extremely strict, feels like you must "drink the kool-aid" to succeed. A "know it all" ethos pervasive.

Pros

This company has a fantastic mission and is doing big, incredible work to preserve our planet. I believe firmly in what they stand for, and think that in general, TNC is an unparalleled organization when it comes to environmental change.

Cons

The office I worked in had horrible leadership. Management was frequently at odds with one another, and this created a ripple effect of poor communication, people being on different pages constantly, and employees being left to fend for themselves and later being held responsible for issues that arose that were clearly the result of poor management and bad communication. Leadership was frequently unavailable, and employees were not held to the same standards. Favoritism and discrimination were very much part of the culture of this office specifically. In the bigger organization, I don't think this was as much of a problem, but that didn't have any positive impact on my own experience.

Pros

It's the leading big conservation organization in the world, with a great brand that the marketing group, despite its best/worst efforts, has not yet managed to destroy.

Cons

Oh, management changes its mind about the direction of the company every two weeks or so -- when it has a direction in mind, that is. There's a huge gap between senior leadership and the rest of the company: ideas and creativity just die at a certain point in the hierarchy, and it's easy for smart, entry-level people to get discouraged there. In a way, the place is just way too successful for its own good -- big-donor fundraising rules the roost, and the prevailing ethos is very conservative, very risk-averse, and frankly not very engaged at reignited an American conservation movement. You get the sense that everyone would be happy if they just cultivated 200 extremely rich donors and forgot about mass appeal. The Nature Conservancy's reputation and success at attracting donors of a certain age masks significant internal decay.
