Pros
I’ve worked for Scion for over 8 years, and I can honestly say I couldn’t be happier with the company that I call family. I’ve been with the company since I was 19 year old, and I started as a community assistant at a student housing facility that was bought by Scion. I decided to stay with Scion after the management transition, and it ended up being one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my student housing career. This company really changed my view of how a corporate management company should be, don’t get me wrong there are challenges Scion is faced with being that it’s a rapidly growing company. However, these challenges are always easy to overcome when you have such a strong support system behind you at the corporate and site level. I met most of the corporate level employees, when I took on a larger management role on property. I was immediately embraced by the corporate team, I was and still am excited to be a part of a company that embraces family, culture, aptitude, and career growth.
When I started years ago I had no idea that I would be pursuing a career in the student housing industry. As I mentioned, I started out as a lower level employee with Scion. I definitely took my opportunity as a Community Assistant very seriously and performed well during my time at the property. Scion saw growth potential in me even when I didn’t see it, and after a few years under a seasoned General Manager I was offered the Marketing Manager position at another property. This really showed me that this company invests in their employees, and hires/promotes from within. Which is really important for someone like me, who is constantly looking for growth.
After a couple of successful years at that property, Scion continued to groom me for excellence. I then was offered another promotion with greater responsibility. My new task was to oversee the leasing and marketing initiatives at a 1,700 plus bed property in Scion’s portfolio. This is definitely a task that would shake anyone, but I was surrounded by so much support and guidance it was no problem getting the property leased up.
Here I am now, a couple years later and I’ve been taking on the General Manager role at a 1,000 bed property for almost a year. It’s really unbelievable to physically see the time, effort, support, and investment Scion puts into each and every employee. Which is very surprising for most large companies under 20 years old. I’ve built bonds with site and corporate level staff members that I will have for the rest of my life.
I appreciate the chance The Scion Group gave me and the investment they continue to make in me. So many have been patient, loyal, and supportive throughout my career. I look forward to continue my growth with them and watch the growth of the company overall!
Cons
More summits/involvement with the facilities team across the portfolio.
