Pay needs to be more competitive

Pros

Promotes from within vs external hire

Cons

However, I was with the company for 5+ years and have seen it change for the worst over the years. Commissions for sales associates got lowered many years ago and as soon as that store hits a certain number for that year- it locks you in at a lower commission. Can never go back to the higher % even if that was a one-off amazing year. They got rid of the long term incentive program which by principle was not taken well by employees in all locations. They cut manager commissions over 50% and they took away quarterly bonuses- these two are generally how store managers were actually making GOOD money. The following year I made $36k less than the prior year Additionally they started doing tiered base salaries and for two consecutive years I took a pay decrease. That should not happen while not having changed roles or location.

Job Vs. Life

Pros

Client relationships. Could build great relationships with clients and contractors. Also loved working with tile and designing things everyday! Was a rewarding process.

Cons

Managment does not take threats seriously. PTO was frowned upon and so was leaving at your scheduled time, if a customer was in the building and was an opportunity to make money. 100% commission based, and if you didn't meet the quota, you'd owe the money back whenever you made extra commission, which is hardly ever. Could spend an hour with a customer and sell a $1 tile, to have someone spend 30 minutes with someone and sell a $20 tile and they'd get more praise because they put in more work. Was told to leave work at work and home at home. Was good at first and then after 3 months and training, you really have no work life balance at all.

Pros

Do a good job with making you feel welcomed and a positive environment. Enjoyed working with my direct team.

Cons

Benefits could be better. Zero windows in the corporate office, gets gloomy. Usually only hire contract to hire and you don't get benefits until 60 days of being hired on with the Tile Shop, does not include the 3-6 months of working as a contract.
