Pros

Zappos does have many redeeming qualities as company. The work life balance is amazing (generally speaking). The benefits are great as well. There are many wonderful people you can meet and there are some great opportunities for growth in the company.

Cons

Zappos has perception with what kind of company they are. They want to be weird and kooky and fun. A place where employees want to come to work. And that is true for some people I am sure but it has not been my experience. There is little to no direction for the company everyone gets to just do what they want. Often time things are asked of us that make no sense and will not help the business it will actually hurt the business but what management wants management gets. Also because Zappos is so culture driven know that friends of friends will be promoted, placed in positions they did not earn, or even are qualified for. I feel that culture is valued above all else. Even if you have a great idea but if it isn't cool or wacky enough it will be turned down so that something like a flying llama can be spay painted on the side of the building. The management does not offer any kind of mentor ship or leadership. They are often just someones drinking buddy and they decided over drinks "that is a great idea" without even understand what they are asking for. Zappos is a company that wants the world to think they are the disneyland of jobs but in reality they are just like any corp company, but you need to be singing it's a small world after all, in a pink tutu and loving ever second of it.

A Holacracy of Dunces

Pros

The culture and vision of the company USED to be something that was a major positive for working at this company, it has since gone with holacracy and teal.

Cons

There have been rumors of C level executives engaging in sexual misconduct with employees/subordinates, shady contract dealings, and drugs. These are not fact and not my personal thoughts, just hearsay expressed among employees.

Pros

Everything you've heard about Zappos in the media is entirely true - the culture and the environment is unlike anything I've ever experienced. There are definite perks to being an employee - great full-time benefits, food and drinks are always around, good lunches, and unlimited opportunities to socialize and meet new people.

Cons

While the environment is meant to be light-hearted, fun, and creative, I don't think that's true in all departments. I felt like my department was very judgmental, catty, and almost was hoping that others would fail in order to better their own cause. It was so different on the inside than what it seems like on the outside. I would come home every night, completely exhausted from playing the politics, swallowing my own pride and sanity for the sake of "being fun", and trying to form friendships and working relationships with people that would stab me in the back if given the opportunity. After about a year of hoping things would get better, I thought it might be a good idea to open up and talk to my manager about how I was feeling. Boy, was that a mistake - instead of coaching me, helping me, and offering advice, I was told that "I probably wasn't the culture fit I seemed to be". After a few more awkward months and some failed attempts to move departments, I left the company - but knew deep down I did everything I could to make it work. I know my experience is maybe one of the rare cases of someone not enjoy working at Zappos, but I thought it might help others that might have experienced/are experiencing something similar.
