Pros

Not for the faint of heart. Working with kids who don't trust for good reason, or have hope that things could change, or feel so much shame it's hard to see- challenges even the best helping professionals. It takes patience and perseverance, however the benefits are incredible!

Cons

It's an incredibly hard job, that challenges both professionally and personally.

I am still traumatized by my time working at TWC. Senior staff would regularly humiliate therapists and mental health workers in staff meetings. I was given almost no training, very little support and regularly screamed at or berated in front of other staff and kids. When the kids I worked with came forth about an adult male staff being extremely inappropriate towards them, senior staff did nothing, accused the kids of lying and said “we need to protect our own” and refused to investigate further. I was told by senior staff not to make a report, even though the state requires therapists to make reports of all suspected cases of abuse. Staff are worked until they burn out and ultimately leave.
