Stepping stone if you're new to this field

Pros

You can learn how to build rapport with youth. If you need to get experience you can get it here.

Cons

They don't show any appreciation for good workers. Team players and workers that know how to be professional are hard to find. They don't make you feel like part of the team until you have been there for at least 6 months. Management doesn't make requests only demands. Training is near non-existent, just learn as you go. Few opportunities for advancement. Very few people of color.

Pros

Steep learning curve, with amazing results in professional growth. Residential is not for everyone, but will prepare you for anything.

Cons

Especially difficult in the beginning. Any unresolved (even when we think they're resoved) will show up. Necessity to believe in process of therapy both for ourselves and the clients we serve. Not the job for people who are private, or like to work alone.

- clients' backgrounds vary, giving a lot of opportunity for learning - able to set your own schedule as a part-time staff - a few skilled workers in the program

Cons

- staff are disrespectful and not trauma-informed when working with clients - lack of professional development
