I had a negative experience during my time at Thrive Global. It was a relief when I finally resigned. Like many, I was drawn to the company for its worthy mission and by the CEO's media messaging. I quickly learned that Thrive is a chaotic, disempowering company with a toxic culture perpetuated by the hypocritical and poor management skills of its most senior leadership What is defined as "compassionate directness" is often deployed as bullying. I saw several colleagues reduced to tears and publicly shamed. I observed executive leadership treat people with such rampant disrespect. Really talented people work there, but they are disempowered and belittled. The most hypocritical aspect of working there was being worked into the ground, and it was not because "I wanted to chill under the mango tree". People work really hard there, but their talent is often misused due to chronic understaffing (high turnover), constantly shifting priorities due to a weak company roadmap, and frequent re-delegation of work because people regularly fall out of the CEO's favor. I felt there was very minimal respect for boundaries and personal time. "Thrive time" is marketed as a benefit when you join, but barely used. The very little PTO I took was scrutinized. I ironically burned-out. Turnover is very high at the company. Many people at all levels of the company leave before one year. This is a big red flag that anyone looking to join the company should consider before signing on. Talk to people who worked at Thrive to learn more about what you're getting into to make sure it really is the opportunity you want to take. Most concerning of all is that there is no coherent company strategy - it changes frequently based on whatever shiny object catches the CEO's eye, or friend of the CEO who would like Thrive to plug their pet project. Thrive had so much potential but management gets in its own way of really seeing it through. It's really a shame. I wouldn't be surprised to read headlines of its demise akin to other star-powered start-ups.
