Pros

Good base, flexible schedule, generally fun job, great resources. I would have stayed here if my coworkers were less negative and if I actually had a sales territory with any opportunity. If you get a good inside sales rep, it’s amazing.

Cons

Takes months to get commission, too many sales reps in tiny territories. They actually give new reps a fifth the market size in some situations, compared to senior reps. You’ll be thrown into an area and work it for a few months until you basically have to pressure small business owner’s time buy something they don’t need or can’t afford. It is a great product, but it’s not a fit for everyone. They’ll say that, but then scold you for not selling to the 80% of your territory that could be mom and pops. Half the deals you sell will never “go live” months after you sign it because the support isn’t there after your sale from other teams. Engineers are always short staffed and you can’t even schedule things. I worked here over 6 months and hit quota- but only made about 4K total commission because not enough “went live” in time for me to figure out it’s a trap. They base your territory size off a consensus that was done over 10 years ago, so you’re more safe in a growing market. You can’t sell to places with more than 10 locations, so you better hope you don’t have a lot of chains in your area- you can’t sell to them, but they’re factored into you territory size.

Thank you for sharing this valuable insight. I am happy to hear that there were parts of your Toast experience that felt rewarding and fulfilling to you. It is very important to provide employees with the resources they need to succeed, both professionally or personally. The concerns you brought up here are things we take very seriously at Toast. Our goal is always to empower our sales teams to successfully partner with the restaurant community, even if our products are ultimately not the best fit. I am sorry that you did not feel this while working with us. Our employees are our most important resource and we do our best to ensure that everyone feels valued and respected as a Toaster. I would welcome the opportunity for further discussion. - Jonathan Vassil, SVP/ GM, SMB

Pros

The people you worked with become family. Amazing, talented, and smart contributors with a shared goal. Unlimited PTO was nice but pretty standard.

Cons

Company was heavily affected by the Covid-19 crisis and decisions had to be made to cut payroll. While I don't fault Toast for making these tough choices to survive, the decisions that were made on who goes and who stays made absolutely no sense. It was pretty clear that the priority was to lower payroll across the board regardless of tenure history, and loyalty to the company. People who have been with Toast since the beginning were tossed aside to make way for contributors who were less experienced and therefore less expensive. They really just didn't care for the people that got the company to where it is now, extremely disappointing to see.

Thanks for leaving your feedback. The impact of the COVID-19 crisis, caused us to make several very tough decisions earlier this year. Unfortunately, the decisions to reduce our headcount impacted Toasters of all levels and tenure. We always have been and continue to be a company extremely dedicated to our people, past and present. Please let me know if there is anything I or the team can do to help better support you and the other alumni through this difficult time. - Jonathan Vassil, SVP/GM , SMB

Pros

The pay was decent, the perks were nice, but I couldn't get on board with the false promises.

Cons

When I was hired it was all about how flexible and family-friendly they are, but when I needed that flexibility it wasn't an option. I even offered to reduce my lunch but was told an hour is required.
