Pros

- Excellent overall mission (on paper) - Great programs for kids - Generally fantastic coworkers - Working outdoors in interesting areas

Cons

Employees are worked to the bone, especially full-timers who frequently work upwards of 50 hours a week or more to adequately fulfill job duties on a set salary. Pay is reasonable for part-time seasonal work, but unacceptable for full-timers considering the time demands. There is a company culture of "equality over equity", in which nearly everyone is paid the same salary (just north of minimum wage) regardless of how much a position demands or how much expertise a person brings. Due to this and more, employee burnout rate is extremely high. Employee support is low, particularly during the non-summer months. Summer hiring and training is generally far more focused on warm bodies and company culture rather than training the actual skills needed for the job. In With a lack of Human Resources or official employee channels, favorites are often played, and employees generally fear bringing up work program or structural issues out of fear of reprisal from upper management. Year-round staff is expected to create their own programs but are not given the non-child-contact time to do so nor provided the support and resources that other educational facilities commonly have, yet are held to the same standards. The company notoriously avoids supporting any minority movements related to race, ethnicity, and gender.

Pros

Good pay although it has gone down

Cons

Communication is downright atrocious, you will not be told anything unless you have emailed at least twice. Management completely ignores any requests for movement to different camps/locations. Management also regularly makes promises that they do not keep, they will hire you for one job and put you on a completely different one. The materials needed to perform the required parts of camp are extremely lacking and any requests for more will be ignored. The owner of the company has a MAJOR nepotism issue, almost every higher-up is either a friend or family member, and this includes recent hires. This makes it near impossible to actually get a promotion because someone with zero experience but is friends with the owner will take it. Any sort of suggestion for making the camp better falls on deaf ears, and often will get you demoted or fired. In-field management is unable to do their jobs because they are given zero support from main management, making it impossible for anyone working in the field to get support. Any reasoning behind transfers that do happen are not given. The person in charge of hiring and assigning positions refuses to listen to any input from anyone other then themself. You have to actively fight against the management for them to pay you the correct amounts if you are working on an hourly wage. Management also sends out “plussers” as they call them who are just friends of the owner who regularly interrupt and humiliate instructors in front of their groups over minor things, they also report directly back to the owner so anything said to or around them will be reported directly back. They basically operate as spies, and they are also one of the quickest ways to communicate with the higher ups. Safety regulations are also almost non-existent. I was never asked for my food handlers card, CPR certification, wilderness first aid certification, or any other safety documents even though they claim to require those on their website.

Thank you for your feedback. I understand from the length of your tenure and feedback about compensation, that there was some level of fulfillment, and that's great to hear. I do hope that the community and team also made a positive impact during your employment. We are always striving to serve youth with safe, inclusive, and enjoyable programs, and thank you for being a part of that for a number of years. As a small, family owned organization, we are always open to feedback. Thanks again.
