We're sorry it sounds like it wasn't a good fit. We recognize our environment isn't for everyone, and we're okay with that. The company has been growing at an average rate of 30% year over year and with that growth comes changes that can cause challenges for everyone. We've always operated with the mindset of hire good people and trust them to do their work, solve problems and ask questions when they have them. If you know you prefer more direction and hands-on management, this probably isn't the place for you.

Pros

Salary is above average for the area

Cons

Benefits are very poor for a salaried positions. Mainly, lack of paid holidays, lack of included Short Term/Long Term disability, health insurance with premiums paid is lackluster forcing employees to pay more for decent health insurance. Software managers often exaggerates success of teams to Business and lies about success of projects in order to stay in good standing with Business. Managers don't let developers speak with Business in order to perpetuate the lies and enforce lack of transparency. Software team is very isolated and doesn't follow the same team building, communication, and inclusiveness that the rest of the company promotes. Promotion structure, job clarity, and expectations are not established and unclear.

We’re pretty proud of our comprehensive benefits, and we’re sorry you felt differently. Our health insurance is really affordable (free!) for the employee. You’re right that you can opt in to a more extensive coverage plan and that is an additional $55/month. That additional premium can be covered by our $100/month healthcare allowance. Additional opt-in coverages include hospital indemnity, short-term disability, etc. We know our PTO package is unique as we recognize that not everyone celebrates the same holidays, so we didn’t previously have set “company holidays.” We got a lot of feedback and listened, and this year implemented 4 company holidays—on top of existing PTO. We are always working on educating our employees on all their available benefits, especially as they continue to expand. Our software team has levels for promotion opportunities that are clearly defined. Within the first week of onboarding, every employee has an expectations conversation with their manager. That is followed by 3 talent alignment conversations a year, where a manager checks in on those expectations. Those conversations are 2-way streets for employees to bring up their concerns as well. We seek software managers with coding experience, rather than solely management experience, to better ensure those running software really understand software and can translate those ideas to leadership. Our teams are currently built around products, that includes a variety of departments such as: software, product, marketing, and frontend. We encourage everyone to work together as a team on a singular goal to make the product better. Everyone on the team is encouraged to speak up and bring their ideas to the table to help make the product better. You can be an engineer and give design feedback, or be a designer and bring up ideas for product changes. Your perception that software management is not communicating achievements accurately is concerning and something we’ll look into. Interesting idea to do wellness checks outside of your department – something for us to consider!
