2 Chairs uses the right language but business practice falls short in delivery

Pros

Private practice setting with the ability to meet for consultation with other therapists.

2 chairs is trying to "fix the broken mental health system" by matching therapists with clients using a private practice business model. Therapists are required to see 6+ clients per day, so if you have a client(s) that are canceling you may have to add more clients to your caseload and book up to 8 clients per day to make sure you are seeing around 6 clients per day. Clients are charged $180/session and therapists are compensated between $75,000-$85,000 based on level of experience. So 2 chairs is collecting $180/session no matter the experience level of the therapist and compensating therapists at a very low rate. Required work days are 9 hours. The company is trying to integrate technology with psychotherapy, the emphasis is on creating new technology to create a sucessful business model, however, psychotherapy is successful based on the quality of the therapeutic relationship. It does not appear that 2 chairs is doing anything different than other "broken systems" its exploiting therapists. Ninety percent of benefits are covered, with minimal PTO. How can 2 chairs better support therapist and prevent burnout? Management is combining the negative aspects of tech culture (over-working/burnout) with the private practice therapy model without the appropriate compensation.

We take the rest of your feedback very seriously and whole-heartedly agree that Therapists are the back-bone of Two Chairs. If you are comfortable, I encourage you to follow-up directly with your Clinical Director or me about your grievances. In the meantime, I would like to respond directly to a couple of your points: -Flat client fee: Clients are charged a flat rate regardless of their therapy needs or degree of therapist. We believe that is the right approach for our clients; it keeps our pricing simple and transparent and therefore makes care more accessible. -Compensation: We use industry data to inform salaries and compensate appropriately according to position, experience, and clinical expertise. Client fees go to support many aspects of the business (salaries, community events, client outreach, etc.). Early on we decided that a salaried approach is right for our model because it builds towards a more humane and sustainable place of work. Other models compensate clinicians based on number of clients seen per day, which we believe can set false incentives and unfairly fault the clinician financially if there is a cancellation. -Benefits: Full-time employees receive comprehensive benefits and part-time employees receive some benefits, such as pro-rated PTO based on how many days worked at Two Chairs. Over the last few months we have made strides in bolstering our benefits package, such as introducing a Continuing Education stipend. This added policy is largely an outcome of employee feedback so that we can better support licensing requirements. Negative Clinician Experience

Pros

This company prioritizes creating a positive experience for clients who are able to received streamlined, frictionless on-boarding for their mental health services.

Cons

As a therapist, however, this translates into little control over your time, seeing 5 or more clients daily, while keeping up with other requirements. This company gives little vacation/sick time and doesn’t subsidize or provide time or resources to pursue continuing education. Also, if you have a Master’s degree, be prepared to be compensated less than your colleagues with PsyDs or PhDs for the same work.

Tech company that does not understand mental health

Pros

It is an avenue to get additional clients you normally would not get connected with. They connect you to clients in different locations you may not normally have access to.

Cons

It is run like a tech company by tech folks who do not know about mental health or the therapist/patient relationship, but who want to enter into this mental health space to get a piece of the insurance company money pie. -As a therapist - do not make this your main source for clients - the company can drop you at a moments notice for unclear reasons thereby having you lose all of your clients. -The company wants the therapist to be skilled at tech to the level nearing that of a programmer/developer where you need to keep track of multiple websites, user interfaces, updates to a constantly changing Wiki (process manual). -Support is limited - they direct you to the "workflow" without much by way of actual connection to support staff or a supervisor. -You can notice how the business needs collide with doing the actual mental health work. For example, they want you to immediately slot up recurring weekly sessions for months with your clients even before the intake. This makes sense from a business perspective, but not from a therapist/client perspective. -They request you give your clients a survey after each session, which makes sense for collecting data, but is not always indicated from a rapport building perspective for your clients.
