So hard to get stuff done

Pros

You can have an impact beyond just this agency. Some are focused on innovation and improving government. Super-flexible work schedule.

Cons

What a pathetic culture. Incentives are all wrong. It is a very hard place to work. It seems like there are no systems--that every time you need to do timekeeping, hiring, contracting it's like it's never been done before. Staff offices think that their job is to tell you what you should do rather than provide services to program staff. No reason to learn anything, though, because next time it will be handled differently. And for an agency that is expert in acquisitions it is impossible to get anything through contracting.

Pros

Still about as flexible and innovative as any agency in government.

Cons

Congressional meddling make work very frustrating. The near total absence of salary increases cause employees to fall farther and farther behind the private sector counterparts with whom they collaborate on a daily basis. GSA just can't attract the talent it needs to be an effective partner.

Boring but Easy

Pros

GSA does a great job balancing work life requirements, and is definitely ideal for the time strapped federal employee. Atmosphere is fine, co-workers are friendly. Lots of in agency organizations to participate in, and a variety of fields & expertise.

Cons

Low compensation for new employees. Days at GSA are slow, management is prone to delegating rather than leading. Leadership is often technologically illiterate. Project direction is non-existent - with very vague issues expected to be resolved rapidly with few resources. Old office - majority of employees are 10+ years.
