Pros

If you live on campus, it's convenient to work on campus. You'll meet a lot of people. The money will help if you need it.

Cons

It takes a lot of time away from your studies, social life, and extracurriculars to work a job that has nothing to do with your major. For me, I was mechanical engineering, so working as a stocker in the Dining Commons doesn't even make it onto my resume. So, I recommend finding a research opportunity on campus which pays a stipend or hourly wage because you'll make the money you need and also get valuable experience for later.

Pros

Low cost of living in Merced makes low graduate student pay tolerable. Good quality of research experience.

Cons

All UC graduate students get paid very little for research, so expect to depend on TA, fellowships or loans.
