Pros

The work environment is very casual (people wear shorts to work in the summer). Telecommuting is allowed when needed. They are embracing new technology and are upgrading their UIs to Web 2.0 and adding a mobile channel.

Cons

The company was bought by a private equity firm in 2007. Things have gone steadily downhill since then. The bottom line is all that matters. Major initiatives are started and then abandoned after a short time. They have invested heavily in building engineering facilities in India and expect the moon from the "more expensive" engineers in the US. Layoffs are routine.

Pros

The only pros existed when I was first hired. Back then the employees were still treated like humans with lives and families.

Cons

This company will work you to insanity and, when you try to wave the white flag, will explain away the fact that they blatantly had an impact on your mental health and will make it a you-problem. I saw too many situations where employees were seeking medical help due to the sheer amount of stress and burnout caused by their jobs and poor management. I worked in HR and not only saw it often but experienced it myself and eventually had to leave.

Pros

Fantastic benefits such as huge 401k match and free health insurance. Great coworkers who care about doing the right thing for customers and delivering good product. Challenging and rewarding software product to write.

Cons

Constant layoffs. Senior management (e.g. Hugo) don't know one part of their anatomy from another about software development and have gutted engineering of essential people. Layoffs seem more for good numbers for an IPO than because the company needed to reduce headcount in order to survive, so their purpose is profit. Pat Wadors can't produce a humane layout scenario. Bad morale among the troops.
