Decent place to start out a career

Pros

-A lot to learn. -Opportunity to move up if you really are motivated and keep at it. -Management is good for the most part. -Decent job to start out your career.

Cons

-Below market pay, especially depending on the area of expertise you work in. -Vacation policy is poor and outdated. -Even exempt employees have to submit timecards. -Male dominant, ratio of male vs females in notable roles leaves a lot to desire. -So many lifers, all for the wrong reasons. Unmotivated, just collecting checks.

Our Total Rewards teams conduct annual research to make sure we stay competitive within market needs. In addition to pay, we have an incredible benefits program including: all employees at UL are eligible for bonus compensation, we offer a generous 401(K) matching structure of up to 5% of eligible pay, we also invest an additional 4% into a retirement savings fund after one year of continuous employment. We also provide Healthcare Reimbursement Accounts and Health Savings Accounts that UL contributes to twice per year! Regarding our vacation policy, full time employees are eligible for 15 vacation days, 9 paid holidays, 2 floating holidays, 2 volunteer days off, as well as 9 sick days. At UL, we are striving to maintain gender parity among all levels. This is a priority for our Diversity and Inclusion function and to advance our commitment we have introduced a number of initiatives to increase hiring, retention and promotion of women within our work environment. Additionally, our CEO has made a commitment to the Gender Equity and the CEO Action Pledges in effort to obtain gender balance and actualize an inclusive culture. Overall our goal is to obtain a place where all colleagues are welcomed and feel empowered to bring their entire selves to work.

Corporate needs to stop into the Canton site

Pros

Part of a large organization with great values and ideas.

Cons

Canton operations are silo’ed from the rest of them organization. There is no sense of pride working at this site. Management is quick to layoff to make end of year sales numbers, and then rehire the same employees back at the beginning of the year (Nov 2019). The thought of running a successful business by other means, such as contracts with clients, raising costs of services, etc, takes second seat to treating employees like they are disposable (layoffs and un-approving already approved vacation time to forcing employees to work around the clock -Dec 2019). UL has treated their employees terribly during the COVID-19 crisis. Originally they were given additional sick time to cover if we needed self-quarantine, after a few weeks UL took the sick time back. Employees are being forced to use vacation time to prevent layoffs, though another round of layoffs is inevitable. Employees are being threatened to with large pay cuts and layoffs if sales numbers aren’t achieved, yet being told to come to work and social distance. Leaderships does not exist at this site, they have all worked from home, leaving the lab personnel to run the site., with the exception of the site operations leader who has isolated himself in the back part of the building with “do not enter” signs to keep everyone away.

Thank you so much to you, and all of UL’s essential workers, that continue to work in our labs to ensure products and services remain safe for consumers around the world. This is always at the core of UL’s mission, and all the more important now, when so many are spending more time in their homes. In these unprecedented times of COVID, like all companies, UL is doing its best to make decisions keeping both employee safety and business continuity in mind. We have asked any employees who can work from home to do so, strictly in an effort to limit unnecessary exposure. Our dedicated employees who work in our lab environments need to be onsite in order to complete their work, which are deemed essential services. We continue to provide the necessary protective gear and have been conducting additional sanitizing and cleaning of all working spaces and lab environments. In the location you reference, we have purposefully blocked off the cubicle/office section of the building so that the cleaning service can spend additional time sanitizing the lab and common areas. UL has provided meal stipends, additional sick leave and continues to work hard to preserve salaries and jobs.
