Pros

Great opportunities to learn especially for electrical/computer engineers and computer science majors. Definitely an excellent job to have while in school. Your success is in part measured by your willingness to learn.

Cons

At times there seems to be a disconnect between management and employees which results in a seeming lack of structure and work falling behind. This is also caused by employees taking advantage of relatively lax hours policies too much.

Pros

They teach you everything you need to know and provide you with endless opportunities for improvement. Workshops, guest speakers, classes, volunteering or even participating in events, giving tours, etc.

Cons

Sometimes, management can be a little difficult to approach with a problem. This is mitigated if you approach the right person at the right time.

Pros

Extremely great place to learn and grow outside of the classroom on the UNH campus. Reviews every six months where your progress and work can be acknowledged, flexible hours, great management and team as well. Access to what the industry is like and 'real' engineering.

Cons

Nothing to complain about, "Best Job I've Had" - Many past and current employees.

Pros

Mentorship programs, upper management usually willing to spend extra time explaining a new technology or protocol, ability to branch out into different consortia, travel oppturnities for students, flexible schedules. Work from home oppturnities depending on consortia.

Cons

You will be paid like a student for engineer quality testing. Depending on Graduate Research Assistant status, you may be ineligible for employment.

Pros

You get to work directly with people in the networking industry. You will learn skills/protocols/information that will help you get a job upon graduation. The IOL has a fairly effective post-graduation industry placement program. You will make friends. Free lunches.

Cons

Pay is not amazing. Managers will micromanage you. Training is very structured and there is no room for deviation. You will find yourself asking often "why on earth was this person given a management position?" The majority of managers will not have worked in the networking industry, or anywhere other than the IOL, so they are not able to bring in a level of expertise I would expect. Most of the management staff will talk down to you.
