Pros

Only for the UPMC name on your resume... There are no advantages to working here. The insurance that you get through UPMC is insanely expensive.

Cons

Every role is understaffed -- from physicians to nurses to patient care techs to pharmacists to housekeeping. Everyone works hard for patient care, but at the end of the day, we all feel dispensable and unappreciated. The only thing that matters for the corporation is the bottom line. Leadership pretends to listen, but is unfair in handling any situation that affects your workflow or patient safety. Run for your life. Don't work here.

Pros

Honestly, I’m not sure that there are any pros to this job. It is just a foot in the door at a company that you may be able to advance within.

Cons

In this position, you are just the mouthpiece for every other department within the health plan who inevitably do not do their jobs. A provider will call and a request will have been sent to finance a month prior and there will still be no resolution. “Just tell them to allow 10-15 business days” is the standard response. Nobody will help you. Once you’re out of training, good luck! BE PREPARED TO ASK PERMISSION TO USE THE RESTROOM. And if you do not ask permission, be prepared to be questioned as to why you left your desk without permission. There WILL be mandatory overtime because they cannot staff the place fast enough for how quickly people choose to leave this terrible department. Do not expect any notice of this mandatory overtime, just an email the day before. Requesting time off is impossible. Only 2 people in the department are allowed to have time off approved on any given day. This job has absolutely no flexibility or positive aspects. I absolutely recommend that you continue pursuing other opportunities elsewhere.

Pros

Benefits were decent, some employees were alright to work with.

Cons

Where to being?! 1. Terrible leadership from the top down. They micromanage budgets and cut staffing the moment they realize their numbers are down. Leadership with Internal Audit and Compliance is very cut-throat, demeaning and talk down to their employees... basically you must do as they demand and not ask any questions, or they will get rid of you. 2. There are widespread issues all throughout UPMC. While people in Internal Audit or Compliance do their best to bring these to the attention of (failed) leadership, the organization fails to timely or properly fix issues in many areas. This ultimately impacts the organization's ability to provide the best care that their patients deserve, along with ensuring that employees, doctors, etc, have the best organization to support them. 3. There is very high turnover in Internal Audit, well over 50%. Their leadership fails to look at themselves to understand the reason why so many people leave their department. Ultimately, top leadership of the Internal Audit department should be replaced with someone who is able to realize the problems they face, address them and treat people in a respectful manner. 4. Bad financial leadership enterprise-wide. UPMC still claims to be non-profit, while specific divisions, such as their Insurance Division, are pure profitable businesses underneath UPMC's umbrella. The government should investigate how UPMC is able to consider all of their divisions as non-profit as this is quite questionable and potentially illegal and/or unethical.
