Pros

- Job security - Important mission and opportunities to have a positive impact on national issues - Subject matter can be very interesting

Cons

- A culture of mediocrity and crippling bureaucracy making having a positive impact nearly impossible - Starting salaries are barely living wages in the DC area, especially if you have student loans - Mid-level managers are counting down the days to retirement and would rather not be bothered - Training programs are a joke

Pros

There is a lot of flexibility in work hours - when not deployed. The deployments for the most part are from 4-6 months and pay goes up exponentially when deployed. The amount of trust and respect given amongst colleagues is very high. There is a lot of jocularity and joviality in day-to-day operations that makes it much easier to work in the environment given. The pay is generally much higher than elsewhere.

Cons

Everyone is required to deploy - this may be a pro for some folks. You must pay for your own medical, dental and retirement (TSP) program. Leadership does not make the best decisions at times and may sometimes leave you wondering why they choose the least logical approach to something. There is a lot of bureaucracy - to be expected in government jobs in my opinion.
