Pros

The post office can be a very steady and reliable organization to work for. It is easy to get 40 hours plus per week. The starting pay is comparable to any entry level job.

Cons

You get hired on as a temp for a 360 day tour with a mandatory 5 day break. Every bid is based on seniority rule and the union controls a lot of what goes on.

Pros

Excellent benefits upon receiving regular positions. Lots of opportunity to currently grow within USPS - most career positions are hired internally and employees will be trained in any area of expertise for any position they are promoted to. USPS is looking for the younger generation to take over the baby boomer bubble that's about to burst in the next decade - so LOTS of opportunity to grow as a professional quickly within the company.

Cons

Organizational HR practices are confusing to new-hires. Lots of inconsistency/efficiency in the hiring process across offices and districts. Example: new hires told only guaranteed 4 hour days and an expectation of part/time hours. Reality: many new hires will end up working 40+ hours a week. Great for people looking for full/time entry-level career work but can be difficult to manage schedules and a work-life balance depending on personal circumstances. Turnover rate for City Carrier Assistants is appx 50% within first 6 months. Take this into consideration and plan accordingly if looking for employment here.
