Death by a thousand cuts

Pros

Many of the people truly care about and enjoy what they do. You can get experience working with a variety of programs.

Cons

Pay simply is not sustainable. Raises are minuscule whenever they do happen, which is rarely. I had over 10 years of experience in the industry (8 with the company) and wasn’t even making $18 an hour. They will gas you up and tell you what a great job you’re doing and turn around and tell you no raises. Huge disconnect between upper management and employee base. All the company seems to know how to do is cut things. Cut newsrooms, cut content, cut local journalism and stuff small papers full of AP content readers can get anywhere. Hard to cover local events when you’re down to one reporter/photographer I guess.

Sinking ship

Pros

Some of the people I've met at Gannett were genuinely amazing. I'm happy to report that most of those amazing people left such a terrible company and are happily working for a company that actually respects employees and pays better.

Cons

Where to begin? In the few years I was there, I have personally watched 3 managers, 5 team leads and a revolving door of young designers all quit in less than 3 years. Each position was replaced by some less competent than the previous position holder. The biggest CON of working for Gannett happened after the GateHouse/Gannett merger in 2019. It was an absolute blast (not!) commuting into work each morning and wondering to myself 'Is this the day they eliminate my department because they need to cut corners to pay off a massive $1.4 BILLION debt?

Pros

Other employees who got conned into working there, were super nice. Some employees who drank the cool-aid, were awful to work with.

Cons

Leadership has NO clue what's going on behind the scenes in their employees day to day. They preach being employee-centric and people-first, but they offer"voluntary layoffs", pay cuts, benefit cuts, etc. They don't spend money on ANYTHING. And I mean, ANYTHING. They would rather save money and overwork their employees, rather than hire someone to lighten the workload for their overworked teams. For one of the largest media companies in the world, you would think they would give a little.
