A nightmare

Pros

Work can be interesting at times.

Cons

No one cares about the quality of the news content. Jobs that should be local are outsourced, and local staffs are cut beyond the bare minimum, leaving not nearly enough people to get the job done. "Local" newspapers have to be filled with irrelevant content or wire copy because there aren't enough writers and editors. Local management is an old boys club, lots of nepotism, clique-y and poor communication. Salaries are a mess; not only very low, but in many cases, veterans of several decades were making less than new hires because of the complete lack of raises. Local management did not care about these disparities. Constant threat of layoffs. Corporate efforts toward diversity shrugged off at the local level. Absolutely no opportunity for advancement. Good workers had more work piled onto them while poor workers were allowed to slack off. Manager took work away from his right-hand man, gave it to people who made less money. Products have zero respect around town; delivery drivers toss papers onto front lawns, which gets reported to neighborhood associations constantly. Absolutely no work culture or camaraderie -- no parties, no activities, no bonuses. No encouragement or kudos from management, ever. Should I go on?

Pros

Decent amount of paid time off (although good luck getting days approved despite working here for years.) Benefits aren’t terrible.

Cons

Overworked. Underpaid. Continuously insulted. If you plan on any sort of advancement, make sure to grease the right wheels. Good work is never rewarded, only nepotism and brown-nosing the correct people. Management is a joke. Raises are few and far between, and on the rare occasion they do happen, they are pretty insulting. If you enjoy constantly being worried about your job being shipped to Mumbai, a recent expansion location for the department that is seemingly already being treated with more dignity, flexibility and respect than the US location consisting of designers who in some cases have a decade or more with the company, this place is right for you.
