Thank you for your feedback. We acknowledge the importance of competitive pay and benefits for our employees and are focused on better business outcomes and increased revenue as we work to make changes that are necessary. Over the past year, we have made progress in maturing our compensation practices, increasing transparency, and have updated our market data to identify roles that may be compensated below market. That change effort has impacted a majority of increase-eligible employees. The market-level compensation improvement objective represents a multi-year process that will continue in subsequent years as business conditions and continued performance allow.

Thank you for the feedback. Our teams are dedicated to delivering their commitments to the diverse constituents we serve. When our employees are set up for success, we can operate effectively, and our business thrives. Goal setting and workforce planning are part of a formal annual process for senior leaders. As organizational changes are made, these plans are revisited. With clear objectives set, leaders cascade goals and priorities through their teams. Where employees feel overwhelmed or unclear, which only frustrates them and adds risk to our performance, we encourage proactive dialogue. Employees can gain support by working with their managers, mentors, peers, and when necessary, HR partners. We will make every effort to facilitate support, training, and any necessary change planning.

Employees often appreciate the high energy and the chance to work on current, impactful topics. Opportunities for Growth and Development: Gannett offers diverse roles and paths, from editorial to operational roles, allowing employees to explore different areas of interest within the organization. Innovation and Digital Focus: Gannett has shifted significantly towards digital media, creating opportunities for employees to work with new technologies and adapt to modern media trends. Collaborative Culture: Working in media requires teamwork, and Gannett fosters a collaborative culture where cross-departmental efforts are common. This can be rewarding for those who enjoy working with others toward shared goals. Impactful Work with a Broad Reach: With publications like USA Today and numerous local newspapers, employees have a chance to contribute to widely read content, influencing public discourse and providing valuable information to communities. Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion: Gannett has made efforts in recent years to support diversity and inclusion, encouraging diverse voices within the company and in its publications, which can be meaningful for those passionate about representation. Learning in Media and Communications: Employees gain valuable insights into media, communications, and storytelling, which can be beneficial across many career paths, especially in roles that value strong communication skills.

Cons

Cons of Working at Gannett Media Frequent Restructuring and Layoffs: Gannett has undergone multiple rounds of restructuring, which can create an environment of uncertainty. Frequent changes in leadership or job cuts may lead to reduced morale and job security concerns. High Workload and Fast Pace: Working in media can mean long hours, especially during breaking news or high-profile events. For some employees, the workload can be demanding, making work-life balance challenging at times. Budget Constraints: As traditional media companies continue to face financial pressures, Gannett has made budget cuts, which can affect resources available to teams. This can mean tighter budgets for projects, limited staffing, or fewer opportunities for raises and bonuses. Pressure to Prioritize Digital Metrics: With the shift to digital, Gannett has placed strong emphasis on metrics like page views and clicks, which can sometimes feel restrictive for employees who value in-depth reporting or more nuanced storytelling. Limited Advancement Opportunities: While Gannett offers roles across departments, some employees have found that career advancement can be challenging due to a flatter organizational structure in certain areas or limited upward mobility. Adaptation to New Technology: Gannett’s focus on digital media means employees frequently need to adapt to new tools, platforms, or metrics. While this can be positive, some employees may find the constant changes and learning curve challenging. Resource Constraints in Local Newsrooms: Gannett operates many local newspapers, and some employees in these smaller markets feel they lack the support and resources of larger publications, which can impact both workload and morale.
