Pros

Good salary and benefits, good opportunities to move to new areas. Women are well represented in management. Beautiful office building, excellent on-site childcare.

Cons

Very strong emphasis on referring to other areas, even for simple calls like activating a debit card. Work life balance was not good when I left. Everyone in my area was forced onto 10 hour days, regardless of personal circumstances. There are limitations for schedule selection - the East coast gets the vast majority of opening shifts and the West coast has the closing shifts. Arizona also doesn't do DST, so our shifts would move forward and backward by an hour when standard time would change to DST for the rest of the country. While bonuses are great, the permanent raises sometimes are less than the federal cost of living adjustments. If extra money is given in the form of a bonus, it's temporary and salaries don't go up as fast. I cannot verify this, but out send that if an employee needs FMLA or short term disability, the company looks for things to hold against employees when they come back.

Pros

The company has great benefits regarding Health, Dental, etc. The on campus facilities in place contribute to an active and health workforce. The pay is good. You receive a base salary and in most cases holiday and yearly performance bonuses. There are great opportunities for advancement, to include continuing education monies to further your career even if you don't spend a lifetime with USAA. The company structure allows you to transition to different types of jobs without having to seek employment outside of the company. For example, I've worked with peers who worked in investment, insurance, banking and the Enterprise executive arm of the company. With the right manager and team, you will be productive, successful and truly come to love what you do. The company has a strong culture of education which will benefit you not only while working at USAA, but with any future business endeavors. They put their money where their mouth is. Human resources does a great job of hiring motivated and dynamic staff. In the midst of the right team, you now only contribute to high performance, but you gain life-long friends. The company DOES allow for ambitious new hires to advance quickly in the company.

Cons

The wrong manager and team will make your work environment hell on earth. The current structure tends to be a clique-ish style, which makes team cohesion harder and creates unnecessary workplace tension. This current environment rewards people who are great with networking, but not necessarily those who excel at the job, so new hires should be mindful to assess the work structure and adapt accordingly. Due to the fact cliques are rewarded and not work, you have leaders who did excel at the frontline jobs, making decisions that may not be the best for the long term health of the company. Less experience new hires are promoted before they gained enough knowledge of the existing job, which means they may not be the best candidate for the next level job. This created tension, distrust and anger, as many hardworking, talented co-workers missed out on promotion opportunities in favor of less skilled peers who do the bare minimum. Leadership is not vested in getting to know and understand their teams, so the teams suffer. USAA used to be a large company with high performing units who were like professional families. Once the recent reorganization was completed, the new leadership never bothered to get to know any of the front end staff. They wouldn't know us, even if we were standing right in front of them. Again, past high performing and happy teams all had engaged management that knew who their staff was, we weren't just ID numbers or stats. The currently work environment is highly stressful, when it need not be. It has and will continue to create high attrition and long term dissatisfaction. I project major increases in medical and EAP benefits being utilized to cope with the current environment. The bottom line: The current work environment is money focused and the employees and the members will take a hit until some corporate equilibrium is found. Apply at your own risk.

Pros

USAA is a very good company to work for. They have one of the best missions i have ever been a part of....Serving our Military and their families. A company that tries it's best to do the right thing every day.

Cons

Soooo many layers of bureaucracy. It is difficult to get things accomplished due to blocks with process and governance. It's a challenging place to work. There is challenging work, but much that makes it challenging to work. i'm always impressed in what we actually get done in spite of ourselves.
