For me it was great, but not for everyone.

Pros

Retired in 2012 after 23 years. Competitive compensation package, very high ethical standards, strong customer service culture. They demand a lot from their employees but they also give a lot back. The employee turnover statistics are significantly better than industry averages which probably tells you all you need to know right there.

Cons

It is a very different corporate culture as it is based on military rather than business values. That is not a bad thing, but it is not for everyone. It does result in a lot of rules, endless meetings, a fair amount of indecision and a mind numbing level of bureaucracy however - especially on the HR front.

Pros

Great culture, really cares about members, succesful with a very solid foundation/business plan. USAA is great company to work for as it provides great benefits to staff, good levels of training and development. Advancement opportunities both vertically and horizontally.

Cons

Same as all very large companies and not something that can be wholly avoided as such if it's not for you, you look somewhere else.
