Pros

USAA has by far the best benefits of any company in San Antonio as they have a 8% 401K Match, three great onsite gyms, 3 Starbucks onsite, and several other work-life balance options. -They have tuition reimbursement as many there have started "on the phones," and then gotten degrees and moved up -This is certainly the place if you do not have a degree and want to build from the ground up or if you have worked at one of the bigger banks and are simply done with it all and want to leave @5 to watch your kids' T-ball game. This is not the place if you are a younger worker who is trying to make a name for yourself.

Cons

USAA has by far the benefits of any company in San Antonio: This has actually created a culture where no one wants to take any accountability, take a leadership stand, and creates a situation where employees expect to be promoted on tenure instead of actual accomplishment. Since it is the best company to work for in San Antonio, if you lose your job with USAA, there is literally no where else to go, so you have all of these extremely passive employees who engage in endless meetings with no real resolutions -The senior leadership is beyond political, as the company operates more like a quasi governmental entity that an actual for profit company -Your starting salary is really hard to move up from as they only do percentage increases with a maximum of 10% at a time. In addition, there is no performance bonus, only a company wide performance bonus, so there is really no incentive for going the extra mile

Pros

Bonuses, pretty campus, military centric, location, Starbucks, nurses office on campus with ability to do physical therapy, covered parking, security, natural drought tolerant landscaping for the most part, on site gun storage facility for us Wild Wild West people,

Cons

To many chiefs in mid-level Management, lower level management is abt. Micro managing when they happen to be at work or their desk, they are not there to assist the employees, but rather turn you away to find answers in a unfriendly user internet database that is not Google like at all, only certain phrases return possible related responses, all while not taking another inbound, back to back call, they expect you to handle your prior claims and take back to back inbound calls no real time to do a through investigation on any claims that may need extra attention. They expect you to refer a customer who just called into buy another product on top of just having a an accident, very inappropriate expectations. They are not customer centric as they have you believe. If a member has a complaint or request a manager 9-10 they end up In voice mail. They are always saying "Toe The Line" we are hiring new people, but they will do what they can to get rid of you once you've been there a while so they can avoid any high salary's or paying for retirement, medical for you. HR, will support the management not the employee on complaints. The metrics system is flawed I so many ways..the older employees for the most part know how to get around and cheat the system and skew the numbers. It's not about how well you are doing but about what you didn't do. To many double standards. People have gone out on FMLA because of the stress of the job. It's never good when you go to the doctor and the doctor says "Oh you work at USAA! Are you here because you're stressed? Would you like a prescription for Xanax?"True story on more than 2 occasions. Cafeteria is very repetitive in its offerings expensive and over sized portions.

Pros

Relaxed work environment, good benefits and time off, competitive pay (after annual company performance bonus). Enough employees seem to "drink the Kool-Aid" about this being the best company ever, which creates a very positive environment. They really do try to think about doing the right thing for the membership, not just looking at them as a source of revenue to squeeze.

Cons

Because so many employees think this is the best place ever, it can create complacency in some people. The technology is a couple years behind where it should be. Yes, it's a big company with complex systems, but I think that gets used as an excuse too often. Also, many programmers are treated too much the same without being properly trained in each specialty. For example, all Java developers write server-side code, web services, and front-end code. As a result the web services are not always well thought out and the client-side code is a mess.
