Pros

Working independently in an outdoor enviroment, good benefits, company vehicle. Very challenging, self gratifying and rewarding to know I'm an important part of a underground construction process.

Cons

Like any type of outdoor work, rain is the biggest problem. Industry and economic changes which effects the way I complete my job.

Pros

There are a few good points to USIC. First, you work independantly, second is the company truck, and no out of pocket expensences. This is great if you enjoy working outside, but the pro's do not out weigh the cons of this job.

Cons

Low pay, and now under the new 2012 policy review, they are all but stopping pay raises. They reduced all PTO by 1 week, and practically made health care unaffordable. Upper management is only trying to reduce costs in the field, and creating more problems on a daily basis, and every person in the field suffers from their poorly educated decisions. There is no time to have a life with this job, so if you have a family it is all but out of the picture. You have to dedicate all of your time to this company, and then understand it will not get you anywhere and there is very few chances to move up from with-in. Supervisors lack any supervisory skills, and most importantly communication skills. Messages are mixed by the time they get to the field from management. It seems as if daily they are adding "new additions" to policies, as in just another way of mico-managing something that has no management to being with.

Pros

The good part of this job is you have to be independent, there is not a manager looking over your shoulder.

Cons

The downside of this job is that you are under a lot of pressure, the work load is always heavy. The on call is a lot of stress, get very little sleep and expected to be back up and do it all again. The pay is not worth the stress.
