Pros

As an ethetician trying to start a career in the salon industry, Ulta is a good place to start off. Training is provided at the Dermalogica Institute. Ulta is a good place to build a clientele with all of its foot-traffic compared to other spas and salons. You are paid hourly or commission. Which ever is highest at the end of the week (plus tips). Even if you don't have a lot of clients during your week, you are guaranteed to get some sort of compensation, although commission is ideal.

Cons

There is too much miscommunication amongst upper management. No benefits, even if working 40+ hrs/week (unless you are considered a "senior esthetician" which is an extremely hard title to achieve by Ulta's standards. As a salon employee, you are required to also work on the floor and help customers in need of products not related to your field (for example an esthetician is required to help customers find hair products). No salon receptionist. Store is always out of stock in products (both retail and salon products) which makes it hard of employees. All salon employees are required to sign a contract with Ulta stating that you will not personally inform your clients if you are leaving to work at another salon. Basically, your clients aren't "yours," they're Ulta's clients!

Pros

-Ulta is a laid back place to work at and there's not too much pressure on the employees -They are able to work around your schedule -It's a fun environment and I love the dept I work for which is selling high end cosmetics - the employee discount is pretty decent (25%) and it increases on employee appreciation days which come about 2-3 times a yr to 35-40%

Cons

-Ulta is not really a place for advancement and recognition is not received enough -Unfair promoting -The hours are the number one con because they are very little. They don't want to pay benefits so they hardly have any full time positions. If you want to work FT at Ulta you either have to be a manager or hair stylist/esthetician. FT there is 30+ hrs. I've worked there for a long time and I am an excellent employee and receive recognition for it and have seniority but that does not matter because they still won't have anything to offer. They just hire new employees and decrease everyone's hours.

Pros

Only if you are in management do you receive the benefits package Store discount

Cons

My location upper management showed favorites. I was a manager but I wasn't treated with respect. I increased the store's business over 30% from the following year. I was told I had to multi-task and I did everything that was asked of me. I was always on time, never late. I never called out and if they were short staffed I always offered to help out. But guests complaints were horrible. If you are helping more than one guest at a time, they really get riled up and will complain they aren't getting the service they deserve. My consultants were lazy. They just stood in the dept doing nothing. I would have trainings, coach them and when we worked together, they would do their job, but if I wasn't there, they could had cared less. Our GM would let them get away with doing nothing. I didn't think this was fair and would voice my concerns to my Prestige Champion and then my GM would have a fit towards me in a very unprofessional manner.
