Pros

United Rentals is viewed by my customers as the leader in the industry. It is a very professional company considering the types of customers we work with.

Cons

They are very generous when it comes to benefits, but I feel they lowball the base salary and do not give Outside Sales Representatives a fair commission percentage on rentals. I say this because they require a Bachelors degree and outside sales experience. The base is not in line with other companies in similar lines of business and do not make up for the extra night and weekend hours required to be successful. The company posts rates in our computers that are not in line with the market rates. We are paid on a sliding scale commission that is reduced if we are forced to lower the rates below those posted in the computer. In order to get any rentals out of the yard in this economy, we are forced to lower rates and therefore, will never get a full commission. They should either go all commission and raise the rates to a flat rate or double the base salary and keep the sliding scale. I do not fell fairly compensated for the amount of hours I work and the experience and skills that I bring to the company.

Pros

The salary and benefits are good.

Cons

The upper management thinks they can set nationwide policies and procedures that will fit all 600 branches of the company, regardless of the markets. They have everything they do written down in policy and procedure bulletins, but the rules are routinely ignored, and if you report it you are subject to retaliation by your manager. They just eliminated another batch of people, and they picked some of the best people to get rid of, thinking they can get the same job done with less people, or that they can hire idiots for less money. We'll see how it works for them.

Pros

United Rentals offers an above average compensation package for this area.

Cons

United Rentals promotes by who you know, not what you know. In most cases you will find management is promoted beyond his/her capabilities in all areas of the company. The constant change in programs signals weak management and popular opinion attributes the changes to "jobs justification" in a weak economy.
