Pros

Good for experience if straight out of college or for learning the joys and pains of working in not for profit.

Cons

People rise in this organization based on their compassion and personality, not on their abilty to do their jobs effectively.

Pros

Work/Life balance is a priority at United Way of the Bay Area. Comp time, plenty of PTO and other benefits are available to all employees. Employees in the Development Department are exposed to a wide variety of professionals and executives, making the position valuable for networking. Unionized work place provides job security as well as annual pay increases.

Cons

Age and years of experience are valued far more than performance or productivity. Inconsistent HR policies (such as working-from-home privileges, performance reviews, etc) confuse employees and lend themselves to favoritism. Almost constant re-organization of company priorities mean that employees are constantly shifting projects, assignments and managers.

Thanks for recognizing the commitment that the United Way of the Bay Area has made to providing solid benefits to its employees! Annual performance reviews and quarterly goals check-ins for all employees are an important part of the organization's talent management philosophy. As part of its continuing commitment to work/life balance, UWBA has implemented flexible start times, expanded the availability of alternative work schedules, and broadened telecommuting options. Since adopting Salesforce in 2012, UWBA has become much more able to deliver on its commitment to transparency by posting all policies within this important, centralized, and easily accessible communication vehicle.
