Pros

Rewarding work and friendly co-workers. The database is expansive and there is a lot of information available to you.

Cons

Poor pay for the amount of work expected of you and the high stress nature of the work. Higher ups get paid a lot of money while the people doing the work on the front lines can barely survive. The benefits are terrible too, but it is a non profit agency so it's not really surprising.

Pros

United Way dwarfs it's closest human service competitors in terms of amount raised, the number of professional staff and volunteers, relationships with corporations, and geographic footprint. As such, it has a lot influence over the sector at large. Employees often find themselves elbow to elbow with the best and the brightest corporate leaders.

Cons

Senior executives don't challenge the CEO and have a hard time sticking to a plan. Culture of consensus makes it slow/difficult to advance ideas.
