Pros

In the beginning when I joined the company it still had a family feel and there was ample opportunity to thrive and achieve, despite a 20-something rookie manager with nothing to teach me. Our Marketing under Jennifer Sullivan was stellar. The product worked and we had a rock star solutions engineer supporting my team. Unitrends was doing well financially and culturally before the acquisition by Insight Venture Capital Partners.

Cons

In the beginning when I joined the company it still had a family feel and there was ample opportunity to thrive and achieve, despite a 20-something rookie manager with nothing to teach me. That was ok because I worked my deals solo and with partners, however, whenever I did involve him because I need air cover, he just made the situation worse for me. Not supportive AT ALL. I overachieved on my quota and was denied the reward: President's Club. Instead the company invited newly acquired PHD Virtual employees to Club, people who had no history with Unitrends and had done NOTHING to support the business at that time. Left a VERY sour taste in my mouth. When I voiced this concern, it fell on deaf ears. While I thrived and was able to earn a good living at Unitrends in year one, year two was all about management covering their own butts and running a Boy's Club. Everything good went away post acquisition--a real shame.

Thanks for sharing your opinions. I don't know when you left Unitrends, but clearly you still have a sour taste in your mouth. I am sorry for that. If you are interested in discussing it please give me a call. Your advise is sound and I think if you were here today you would see a much different picture. Good luck.

Pros

I can only speak of support. The team of engineers that work in support are second to none. The camaraderie you'll find in times of trial is nothing you'll ever see again. When things got busy, they always offered a little extra to those who want to stay late or come in early. The brought in lunch as often as was feasible to make sure you still get a lunch if you're busy. The management team is first class. On a professional level, they will be there if you need anything. On a personal level, they are wonderful people. Big pro: You get to learn linux.

Cons

Don't drink too much of the koolaid. The company had a "small business" feel when I started but changed over time. It's actually run like "big business" now. I prefer the "small business/employee centric" style myself, but that's why I'm an engineer and not on the business side of things. While, the company will take anything you can give it, they'll continue to ask for more. Countless long days, unable to leave your desk. For some, this would actually be a pro... Not for me. The biggest detractor for me was what came from above the support management's head. It always seemed like decisions were made by senior management (C-Level) to "fix" things but inevitably it would backfire. The hardest part about the job was dealing with absolutely terrible Q&A before a product is released to the customers. The two weeks following a major release WILL be incredibly stressful. Instead of properly staffing, they'll ask you to do more than one job at a time, jobs that should be 40+ hours a week on their own. It takes people leaving for there to be a moment of realization that too much load was carried. Be prepared to be short staffed.

Pros

Unitrends has an amazing product line, support team, and employees. It is a great company to work for with unlimited potential.

Cons

There has been a bit of re-organization internally specifically in sales. Need to stay focused on the goals and don't waver.

Thank you for your comments. you are spot on with the need to continue the investment in technology. We currently have over a million dollars in development for tools and portals to help our employees and channel partners become more efficient and effective in the marketplace. Please be vocal about what else we need to invest in. Thanks - Kevin
