Nursing units are the worst: lots of gossip, favoritism, and unprofessional nurse managers

ICU RN

Business Outlook

Pros

Can learn a lot. A lot of experienced nurses mixed with a substantial amount of 0-2 year ICU experience nurses.

Cons

Can be a little cut-throat at times. A lot of micro-managers and the pay is horrible. Not a lot of room for advancement within the unit.

Pros

Making your own schedule, flexible schedule most of the time.

Cons

Lack of communication, lack of training, computer issues with charting. When I worked in the hospital in did not have these troubles, but with the computers for homecare it is contestant troubles. The charting is very long, and take hours to do even when you get proficient at it.

Pros

It would be an easy job under normal conditions. Most of my co workers were mostly nice.

Cons

Tried to make me a debt collector when i really was just a receptionist. No communication. Boss has her solely her own interests at heart. She literally told me she didn't care about her employees but about how things make the clinic look. This is one of those moments where I had left because of my manager and lack of growth potential and not as much because of the actual company. She had a few favorite people that got away with things as bad as coming to work drunk but if you were not her favorite and forgot to mention something to a patient you got called out and embarrassed without any warning in front of three clinics during the morning meetings. Pay was awful they told me I had no experience when I had over 6 years of experience dealing with the public in management. So much less stressed now that I'm done. Also after we had a long discussion multiple times about how I and many others didn't feel valued she blew me off. Then I had to leave on short term disability which wasn't paid and I asked for guidance about it multiple times and didn't get a straight answer I got screwed out of my PTO and sick time. No honesty. Unless you are desperate I'd go work shoveling dog dodo instead.

Pros

Great opportunities for advancement. Education encouraged. Nurses have a voice, are listened to and action taken. Great benefits. Love my manager! Fair nurse/patient ratio.

Cons

Mandatory sign up. Staffing office needs to become more educated on advanced staffing models. Salary not very competitive.

Mental Health Specialist Community Support Program

Pros

Just to clarify the Mental Health Specialist and Mental Health Professionals are two completely different positions on the website. The mental health specialist works in a group home (an actual house) where you can have up to five clients that you pretty much keep an eye on the entire shift. The pro is that its a pretty chill position. You monitor clients, counsel them, give them medication, help them cook, etc.

Cons

I worked 2nd shift, which is never a great shift. The program just recently got a manager for the houses. There was no manager for the first 8 months i worked there.

Pros

They are always low on help so overtime is incredibly easy to get. The job is basically pretty easy.

Cons

There is no middle. You are either a manager or an hourly employee. There are literally no inbetweens. Employees that have been here 15-20 years are still treated as if they started yesterday, and new hires are treated wonderfully until they've been burned out by overtime. There is no incentive to do a good job, in fact they simply want you to get done fast. People are numbers, employees quite literally count for nothing, led by an equally disgruntled, just older and more beat down management that is ineffectual, does not offer change, and continues with an inefficient status quo simply to keep their jobs, it seems. The employees that have been of service for any amount of time are literally unhappy, more likely unable to get a job elsewhere than anything else. There is no "I" in team, nor is there any "team" in team in the Patient Access Department. It is almost like a contest to see who can "tattle" on who the fastest, the one with the largest knife in your back wins, sadly though, they win nothing. There is nothing to be gained. The raise is at best $0.25 per year, a Christmas "bonus" that was cut in half from a year ago at a "FOR" profit hospital. There is absolutely no "care" in healthcare unless you truly care about the patients you're trying to help, because it is not only not rewarded, if you don't follow ridiculous, and again ineffectual protocol, you can actually be reprimanded for helping a patient. I worked with someone that left their "designated area" for 45 seconds to grab an elderly patient a blanket. For this employees trouble, they were lectured by two members of management for 45 minutes about leaving their "designated area." They were taken away from thei "designated area for SIXTY TIMES the amount of time it took to help ONE patient by TWO managers. It is simply sad. Employees are micromanaged by bitter management, that likely went through the same things themselves. While doctors walk on air, nurses a close second, welcome to the lowest end of the health"care" totem poll. Stay away if you value people, life, sanity, dignity, and any amount of satisfaction in what you do.
